TV meme day 15

Jun 10, 2010 19:54

I woke up this morning asking myself: "Why didn't you put Jake Foley as your favourite yesterday?"
"Damn!" I thought. "Oh, well, I have a spot for him another day, no harm done."
"Or Alec Hardison."
"DAMN!"

That stronger "damn" was because I don't have a spot for Hardison planned... So apologies to two of my favourite geek boys for forgetting them. OTOH, I'm not sorry about picking Clark, because he's awesome, and it led to some great youtubing today.

Anyway, on to today's question:

Day 15 - Favorite female character

Lynda Day

Yeah, yeah, I know, big shock. What can I say? When you become deeply enamoured early enough, with a worthy enough target, the sensation may never part. I wanted to grow up to be Lynda Day. Which can explain why, at certain points in my life, I was such a raging bitch, because Lord knows Lynda Day isn't easy to be around. After all, she's someone who'll say, "One thing I've always wondered about you, Graham - when you wake up in the morning, how do you tell?" Not to mention that when told that the person addressed is not Graham and that Graham is in the hospital, she'll say, "What are the visiting hours?"

Yet she's not a villainess, and not just because she has a (carefully hidden) touch of humanity about her. Her aim is to run a newspaper, and she'll stop at nothing to do that, but she doesn't engage in random cruelty just because. She's obsessive, she knows it, and she makes no excuses for it. And people go along with it, even as they call her Vampira (to her delight) because they too want the paper to come out.

Lynda's intelligent, outspoken, witty, a lousy socializer, and will only dress up if she's got an important meeting to go to. She's an unlikely heroine, yet the show makes us sympathize with her, because she's a complex, interesting, occasionally sympathetic character and she gets the job done. When Lynda showed up in my life, I was using invisibility as a survival technique. (It worked so-so - I did survive, but I was scared to walk past my old school for years afterwards, even though my classmates had long since left.) Lynda showed me there were girls out there who were just as smart as me, just as awkward at parties, but who could still get to do big and important things. And hell, she even had erstwhile skirt-chaser Spike practically on a leash.

So all in all, I'm not so sure she was a bad role model to have.

Just for the sheer beauty of it, here's a link to Bad News, with Lynda's chewing-out of Cool Cat and Zack.

(Yeah, I know, my favourite woman couldn't be further from my favourite man if I tried. Though strangely enough, I think they'd get along. After all, Lynda is used to Kenny and Clark is used to Lois.)
