CoC in demand

Feb 23, 2008 20:51

So, I started thinking about just how many CoCs are underrepresented in fandom, sometimes vastly so (*cough* Gus on Psych * cough*), and it became rather depressing - and then I started wondering about the ones that aren't underrepresented, and why that is.

At which point thelana made a very interesting post about that, among other things. Her example of ( Read more... )

Comparing the number of fic for Gil/Nick, Nick/Greg, and Gil/Greg to the number of Warrick/any of those three fic - the total is paltry at best.

For some reason, quite of few fans do not like Warrick Brown. Maybe it's the actor that portrayed the part, I really don't know. One thing of certain, I felt the writers assassinated the Warrick Brown character from the beginning. During CSI pilot, CSI Holly (white woman), dies in the line of duty, while her supervisor Warrick leaves her alone to go gambling. The fact he was coerced doesn't matter. The plotline just set him up as the unlikable one.

I can't comment on the specific case of Warrick, not having seen CSI, but I think underrepresentation is a lot easier to find and that there's often (though not always) good reason for it in the plotlines. So I wanted to check if it was possible to write a CoC in a way that pleases fans.

Since you mentioned it, I gotta ask-- what in the world happened with Warrick/Catherine? I watched CSI from the beginning, Warrick is my favorite character, and I was all excited about the indicators that a couple I've shipped from the start were going to become canon (I'm all about the rarepairs, would have been my first canon OTP). Then I miss a couple episodes, and all of a sudden he's blowing her off and he's married. The hell?

I tend to like CoC best in procedurals (especially Homicide and The Wire, where they're written beautifully), but I'm generally satisfied enough with canon that I don't go looking for fanworks. Particularly true with The Wire, I can't even imagine writing fanfic for that show, it's too perfect to spoil with mediocre writing.

Marriage. Warrick became enlightened after the Graveyard episode, so off he goes and marries Tina. Huh! Like who is this person. You can see Catherine's hurt. I watched a few more episodes and then stopped after years in the fandom, until recently. If I was into Het couples, Warrick/Catherine would definitely be my first choice. They have chemistry between them and I love the innuendos, gestures, and smiles.

I tend to like CoC best in procedurals...

This is unfortunate to some extent because it demonstrates the inability of the powers in Hollywood to present media beyond certain stereotypical ideas. There are many stories for CoC that do not just exist in crime, drugs, and the ghettos. Too bad, Hollywood doesn't have the guts to explore all of life and not just a segment of life.
