women over forty

verstehen has a good rant about good 40+ female characters on TV. With a list. And it just so happens that last week when I was having a long boring train ride to an interview in Bålsta, I started making a list much like that one. That is to say, it started as a list of TV mothers I liked, but soon morphed into 40+ women in general. After that rant, I ( Read more... )

Ooh, Janeway's a good one - imdb has her as 40 exactly when the show started.

I've never heard of the other ones, though I tend to like Diane Weist in general.

Okay, interesting. Peeps to look out for, then.

Re: Dewhurst, I was so sad when I looked her up on imb for this and found out she was dead... :-(

I always loved Madeline in la femme nikita (though I can't remember if she qualifies as the 40+ at the time of the show.) Still, the contrast bt "young" Nikita and her as a mentor boss figure puts her in an older age group anyway. God, I loved that character.

I haven't seen that show, so I can't agree or disagree. :-)

Madeline? Leaves you torn with the desire to beat the crap out of her and be just like her at the same time. (I remember reading this characterization in a fic once, and boy, most accurate description I ever read about her.)

The borderline list for me is only about over/under 40, not how much a character appeared. I have only very vague memories of the grandmother, since I haven't watched much of Charmed, but I do seem to recall her being well past 40. :-)

And Romana is two chars all by herself! Yay!

And now for something completely off topic for a moment ...they made a series out of Ronia? I have the book and loved it as a child!

There's oodles of shows here I'd forgotten. I mean The Cosby Show! Golden Girls!

They did, yeah. Three parts, though the DVD version is the cut-down cinema one. If you want it with subs you have to try the illegal way, I'm afraid.

It's a pretty good film. The special effects are a bit old-fashioned and the child actors aren't always able to deliver their lines (how do you say a line like "eleven winters I have lived, but the twelfth will be my death"?) but apart from that, it's wonderful. Though maybe that's nostalgia speaking, they show it on TV all the time here and have been since I was a kid.

What can I say, I'm a child of the 80s. I could probably have added more if only I remembered the shows better. Say, how old was Kate Tanner? *grins*
