ramble on vids, fics, and bad taste

ficbyzee's post on literal clip coices in vids got me thinking about vids, and why so often the most lauded ones leave me cold when someone's very first vid with audio left in and aspect ratio changes can make me squee.

For me, over-literalness is so far down the list of annoying vid things. I like vids that make narrative sense, and lyrics are part of ( Read more... )

I am crap at vids and often literal. I think. I am unsure how much literal is bad?

Considering how much I adored your use of "I'll be forever blue" I'm probably the wrong person to ask. :-) But personally, I'd say that if the literal clips disturb the narrative or if they make each clip choice a little too easy to guess, that's too much.

I liked my sadly literal "I'll be forever blue"! It's why I made the vid!

I kinda think the OMG-no-literal-no thing is so much vidding wankery, and it and similar sacred cows have a lot to do with why I don't hang out in vidding places.

There are times when it's inappropriate, yes. But generally speaking, a song tells a story - yes? And a fanvid tells a story based on it - yes? (I know, I know, exceptions apply, but you get the idea). Literal shots can help tell the story.

That doesn't mean every shot is right, of course. An angsty song with "She turns around," matched with a laughing girl turning around, is a mismatch. But I think the "though shalt not" attitude towards literal clip choices in general is rather petty, and to me, it disregards one of the points of the fanvid - to capture and accentuate something about a fandom's journey.

Exactly. Of course, for me things blur when it comes to what's literal or not - a tight metaphor could "feel" literal to me. For example, I think my Telegram used fairly tight lyric matches, but the "house" wasn't the house, it was John. So it's not literal, but it kind of feels literal in my head. :-)

Yes. When yhlee made Sunset Boulevard on my request, we noticed this with "Wallpaper peeling at the corners." There is a clip in Birthday with Cordelia peeling wallpaper, but it's absolutely the wrong clip in context, since the lyrics are about being desolute and Cordy is a big TV star at that point.
