I totally thought Jack was joking when he said "Crash." I didn't even realize it was an announcement. Then the whole crew there, jumping around in the audience, it made me happy for them.
I don't think the presenters are allowed that kind of joke. As I understand it, there are all sorts of safeguards to make sure no one declares the wrong winner (check snopes talking about the Marisa Tomei rumour).
So I knew it was true - which was why I sat there with my mouth open.
I was just sort of in a haze (it was a long day) I heard him say "Crash" then my mind took a minute to process that it was a movie title, and the winning movie title at that, then I saw how incredibly happy the people affiliated with the moview were, and it outweighed any of my bitterness from BBM losing.
I wasn't bitter - I haven't seen the film, so it might very well be better. Besides, Paul Haggis made due South as well as the script for Million Dollar Baby, so I like him on principle anyway. I was just really, really surprised.
How's that for entirely subjective and unverified?
It seems you're right, though - I've checked the numbers now.
I took the joke as a reference to his reputation as someone who's never settled down into a committed relationship, i.e., after one date he'll never see you again.
Aha, okay. So it seems it's my nonexistant knowledge of George Clooney's reputation that screwed things over for me.
I got most of JS's other jokes though, I think. I certainly found him funnier than some of the other pieces of comedy - Jesus Christ, could Ben Stiller have been any more cringe-worthily unfunny?
