My Healycest icon, and Roseveare's comment on it, made me think some more on my attitude towards incest, and what I'm okay and not okay with

I have similar views on incest in fiction. I admit, I relish the complete fucked-up-ed-ness of River sexualising her relationship with her brother Simon--but only so long as Simon does not reciprocate. Becasue it lends to the tragic nature of River's social and psychological damage for me if she blurs the lines between eros and agape. Plus it's subtext (and, had that scene from "Our Mrs Reynolds" not been cut, would have scarily enough been text--albeit, in a jokey sort of way) that I can't help but see on the show itself. But what interests me is the squick-factor. Not eroticising it, if that makes sense, so much as the added dimension to the characters, and their trauma.
However, when I watched the SciFi mini of Children of Dune? I couldn't help seeing incestuous relationships. Alia and Paul (and the Duncan gola/Alia/Paul triangle) and Ghanni and Leto II were just... there. I mean, for me, there was an undercurrent of sensuality and sexuality in those siblings scenes together, and while some of it might just be wishful thinking, I

For me, it's still a squick--but a squick I have interest in exploring either through fanfic, or discussion.
Yeah, I can see that. It's not something I'm prone to do, and with many of the popular pairings I think it's just adding more complications than needed (Faramir and Boromir for example have an interesting enough relationship without the incest), but incest as a dysfunction I see as a perfectly respectable plotline. I just avoid reading the stories in general since there's no way of knowing if the story is bad!incest or good!incest until you've read it.
Out of curiosity: I've only seen the first Dune miniseries, are the same actors in the second?
Or mebbe I just read too muh VC Andrews as a teenager. That too is entirely likely...
I've heard other people say similar things. In which case my position would be based on the fact that I've never read her. ;-)
Alec Newman is still Muad'ib, but there are all new actors as Alia (because she's all grown up), the Dunca Idaho gola (Edward Atterton, from Three), and Alice Krieg is Lady Jessica. James MacAvoy is HYPNOTIC as Leto II. I enjoyed the 2nd mini much more than the first.
You're right about not knowing if it's good or bad until you've tried it. I do stay far away from incest in some fandoms (the Luthorcest makes me run away in SV). It's only very particular cases where I buy it as a logical extrapolation of canon. Or am interested in seeing what it would do, if that makes sense.
Might be worth seeing, then. I don't really remember much of the first, though. *g*

It makes very good sense. Still, bad stories show up in the best of fandom, and the risk when those stories are incest stories is that one ends up with images in your head that one *does not* want there.
