Yesterday, I had some fun over at the website for Statistiska Centralbyrån, or more specifically, with their name search. I typed in every Lord of the Rings name I could think of, and the site gave me a remarkable number called that as their first/used or middle name ( Read more... )

Pippin and Peregrin as first names? For the love of Lorca, there has to be a limit to the stupidity of parents. Save them poor kids from unusually stupid names or dwell in purgatory for eternity. *shudders*

You could probably get away with Pippin and Peregrin for girls (Pippi and Peri) or even Peregrin for a guy, with an alternate spelling: Perry. And I can just *barely* see a guy named "Pip." It might work for a businessman, though. One rule of thumb: If you can hear the guy/girl introduced at a major banquet as the CEO of a major corporation, then the name will work for your baby.

On the otherhand, I really, *really* feel sorry for the "Bilbos." I know they're gonna go by "Bill." Espeeeeeecially since "Bilbo" rhymes with something sexual. <*g*>

Actually, even "Bill" is a rather unusual name in Sweden, though they could get away with it, I suppose.

I didn't check any girls for "Pippin" - only went with the sexes from the books. Maybe I should have reversed them as well.

It might work better in an English environment - but in Sweden? No, no, and no again. A business man called Pip (peeping sound) would get laughed out of the room and Pippin means *the birdy* :D And pronouncing Peregrin in Swedish is just painful for both the tongue and the ears. So incredibly wrong.

And hey, I didn't even thing about the connection regarding Bilbo. Ick! I predict major traumas for the poor sod.
