[moving filter] Got a question...

What do you all think is the best way to pack dishes? Do you use newspaper, bubble wrap, towels, what? I have to start thinking about this pretty soon. If it's to be newspaper, I need to start rummaging through people's recycle bins in the next week or so ( Read more... )

moving!, life, miri!, question!

Some moving & storage places sell boxes of newsprint pretty cheap (like $5 to $10 last time I checked), which is a good idea if you don't want to deal with the messiness (ink smearing, etc.) of actual newspapers.

I personally pack dishes & breakables in whatever's handy - out of season clothes, sheets, towels, etc. I have to pack up my linens & clothes anyway, so why not use them to protect the stuff I don't want to get smooshed & smashed? Then again, I'm cheap ;-)

Oo, good to know. I'd wondered if I should be checking those places out - I guess it makes sense, moving being their business and all. *duh!*

I tend to do the same thing, actually, though I've never done it with my dishes. Like I said, I used pillow-cases in my box of picture frames. I also used some of my plastic grocery bags as wrapping for various knick-nacks. Maybe I'll break out my summer-time clothes and use those for my dishes; that's not a bad idea!

I tell ya, this whole packing and moving across the country is a much bigger deal now that I'm an adult that actually OWNS stuff. It was much easier when I moved up here with my suitcase and a box or two of random crap!

Whenever I move (and good lord, I've done it 4 times in the last 4 years) I'm amazed at how much stuff I have! And I've just been moving around Virginia Beach - I don't want to think about what it'd be like to move across the country!

It's definitely different! I have to decide what's worth hauling and what's not, because I can't really make multiple trips like I could if I were moving across town. Good thing my furniture is old - I'm not having any problems saying goodbye to it! Luckily my future roommate has a bunch of stuff already, so that makes it even easier to decide what to bring. I'm something of a packrat by nature - not terrible, but I still have more stuff than I really need to hold on to. And now, I have to downsize from a 3-bedroom house (where I live alone!) to a 2-bedroom apartment I'll be sharing with another person. I see storage centers and dumps in my future.....

I've always used kitchen cloth... The idea is to have it securely packed, so there's little motion.

I guess that's what I'm leaning toward. I have a TON of handtowels I've accidentally stolen from work, I might as well put them to good use. Come to think of it, I even have some packing peanuts I can use to fill the gaps....

I'd go with tshirts, towels... stuff that isn't *just* packing materials.

That seems to be the general consensus - and it definitely makes sense. Guess I'm going to break out the t-shirts and summer clothes!

I don't have anything to say on the dishes (I have boxes for mine) but the kitty -- how well does she travel, in general? Have you had her in the car much at all? I probably wouldn't do kitty narcotics for mine but some, like Kim's cat, absolutely have to have them. If you're not sure you might want ot have them on hand in case you get a couple hours down the road and she's freaking out.
