Agreed that often weight gains are associated with weight training. It is more true that our inability to LOSE weight has far more to do with what we eat and or don't eat. For instance, there are some of the fellas in our unit who do absolutely NO cardio, and ONLY lift and not only gain weight/muscle weight that is, AND loose fat - but their diets are VERY different than your average Joe's diet! Having worked in the clinical treatment of eating disorders for over 20 years, it is clear that it a combination of 3 key elements that can make the most of a healthier body and appearance. It includes BOTH cardio and strength training and I think most important is the diet. The saying, "we are what we eat" holds true here. In my work, I've found also true the adage, "it's not what we eat, but what is eating us." Oddly enough, I've witnessed DRAMATIC weight loss occur IN DAYS of clients bringing resolution to otherwise unresolved issues!
