I can't decide whether I'm annoyed by my reading various Christian mystics through my perverted lens (it's so distracting and I want spiritual revelation too!) or whether it's because of the sex that I'm drawn to them in the first place. Probably the latter.

Well, you can combine the two, you know. Of course I don't think Julian was seriously writing s&m fantasy, but there is an undeniable eroticism--or mayhaps I should say "intense sensuality--in her writing, and in a lot of mystics' writing, I think.
