I spend far too much time on atheism trying to convince people that ramming 'there is no God' down peoples' throats is just as dickish as ramming 'there is a God' down peoples' throats.
Somebody was talking a while back about creating a commnity for atheists who are nevertheless seduced by the paranormal: if it involves ghosts/UFOs/psychic powers/etc. etc. i'll probably read/watch it, so I think it's a great idea and i'd probably do it myself if I didn't run like, 6 communities myself already :P
See I *love* paranormal crap, I really do. I find the whole thing completely fascinating, and not in the "I am skeptic, watch me debunk!" kind of way.
I personally feel that if other people want to believe in religion, and that makes them happy, on an individual level, I'm down with that and I think that anything that brings comfort in this crazy world is fine by me. What I'm not down with are wars being fought for religion, oppression in the name of religion, denial of access to basic human rights in the name of religion, and so forth.
And yes -- fundamentalist atheists are just fucking annoying. I went through a phase like that when I was in college, I'm ashamed to admit. Now, I'm really more of a live and let live atheist. I'm rather embarassed by those who devote their lives to getting "in god we trust" removed from currency. That's just silly.
If you already have 6 communities, what's a 7th? :)

I always hover between the two. I will consume endless amounts of information about the paranormal - a good 50% of the books I own are about it - but I will almost always come it from a skeptical, analytical angle and have yet to find any cases of any paranormal stripe particularly satisfying. There's a few hauntings that are certainly compelling, but pretty much by definition they're always anecdotal, and hence combined with good ol' Occam's Razor makes them pretty unlikely.

Well, why don't you start a community, and then I will join? :^)
I must admit that, even when I am not an atheist, but an agnostic, I am partial to the Kalam Cosmological Argument, so I suppose I could find interesting *your* new community. :P
I kind of sort of do. But I think it would only be you and Charly, so it's not like I'd have any real power. You have to be able to have disposable members to kick around before the read LJ madness sets in.
Mostly, I just have a name, and a vague notion. If only this were still the dot com era, I'd have millions by now! Millions!

But yes, the sins of religion against humanity are very very great.
This is totally why we need a forum. :)

I can barely master the LJ cut! How could I *do* this? You need to have like mad LJ skillz to run a community! And wisdom! And mad Mod powers!
(I'll have to start thinking of all the ways that I can ban people hehehe)

"I'd recommend Chicos over Lane Bryant for the faux multicultural look favored by most social workers . . . "
As a social worker, I'd like to say "LOLOLOL!" b/c damn, that's exactly right.

It is, at least, an improvement over the socks and sandals look that it seems to be replacing . . .
It's just so hard to pass Chicos without pointing and laughing.
