I'm rather good at shopping. It comes from years and years and years spent at thrift stores, at auctions, at flea markets, and at garage sales. If I couldn't pick out fabrics by touch, my mother would have thought she failed. My soul dies a little every time I wear polyester.
The whole impetus was growing up without a lot of money but nevertheless refusing to compromise on quality.
The stockings weren't that much of a savings, really -- they retailed for $7, so they were only about 75% off, which while exciting, isn't incredible. That should be easy to find. The real steal was the silk skirt which I bet was probably around $170 retail.
The real secret is finding the store that no one else goes to. That's the beauty of this TJ Maxx. The same holds for thrifting. Thrift shopping in Santa Cruz sucked because everyone did it. Thrift shopping in *Watsonville* -- definitely a step ahead.
(Can you tell that I've thought a lot about shopping?)
NO ONE has a body for off the rack clothing. Honest. If you want something that fits perfectly, it has to be tailored. Period. End of story.
I don't know anyone, regardless of the alleged perfectness of their bodies, who fits into all off the rack clothing. It's very telling that models in actual magazines always have their clothes pinned and taped to look as though they really fit.
Trust me. You *can* find things that fit and are flattering at any price. It's a little more challenging to get things cheap, but I think that's a huge part of the fun. I <3 shopping war stories

I think this is the best site in the net I have ever visited!

I hate shopping, really I do, and I often pay higher prices just to be done with it. But I'm broke now, so hmmm. (Love Hue stockings...)

I also grew up poor, but never had any sense of fashion. Just wore what I was given.
Also, I don't have a body for off-the-rack clothes, so finding something that fits and is flattering is always way more exciting than price.
