The Player as Hero of Azeroth

(Spoiler warning for the Lich King fight if you follow the links, but my post here is only spoilery for questing in BT, GH and Dragonblight.)

There are a ton of threads on the various WoW forums about the fall of the Lich King, many of them less than complimentary with regards to the final boss fight and its cutscene.

Hmm I actually disagree, because your "awesomeness" isn't really reflected anywhere else other than those boss fights. You're still fetching body parts for farmers and carrying notes when you are't in the dungeon. And honestly I think it cheapens Arthas/Illidan to have him beaten by a handful of random people with silly names, I think I drew a comic about it once :P

To give a specific example, I definitely get that "you're a hero who saved the world" feeling in Dragon Age, though that's a single player game so it's much easier to do.

Well, it also comes down to balancing gameplay with story. Sure, Jaina, Velen, Tyrande and Thrall aren't out there killing boars, but if we were treated like them we'd...sit around in a castle all day talking to diplomats and staring into space. Yawn.
