I like this route better than mine -- it's less paranoid and more directly focused on your area of need. Mine is an approach borne of tired experience; I think your system is in better shape than most of those I encounter.
First try an online virus scan. I know you already did, but let's err on the safe side. Might also want to hit it with Spybot, too. Worst that can happen is that they come back clean, which leaves us no closer to having an answer.
In lieu of Windows Task Manager, you might want to use What'sRunning to diagnose issues. That'll look under the hood more thoroughly into services and startup items, to see if anything looks out of the ordinary.
Failing even that, you could try running HijackThis and posting a log of it -- that'll dump enough information to see if there's anything malicious crawling around inside there

Advice from someone who has to answer printer problem questions every day -
Try the method at the top. If that doesn't work, it's probably a defective printer. The cheaper the printer, the more likely it's crap to begin with. I know Office Depot only has a 14 day return policy on technology - I'm not sure about Best Buy. Try exchanging it for a new one of the same model. They may say no and have you contact HP, which is a pain in the ass which probably won't solve anything.
