My sister and I went to see it tonight, and I am VERY impressed. They did the movie almost exactly at it should have been. Go Peter Jackson!! :)
Yes, Frodo does get his finger bitten off by Golem in the book. It wasn't a pretty sight to see it in the movie, but it was as it should have been. I agree that you can't help but feel for poor Frodo through the entire movie, not to mention Sam and watching Golem manipulate Frodo like that. :(
It was awesome that they didn't end it before the departure on the white ship and played things through to the end. And the removal of Sharky/Saruman and the Scouring of the Shire....definately a good idea. I still wonder what Tolkien was thinking about when he wrote that, it was just so anti-climactic to the rest of the story. Wise decision to remove it.
Return of the King was a definite A+. Let's hope that certain geniuses in the Motion Picture Academy realize that when it comes to awards time.
