This was the first and so far only episode of the show I have ever seen. (Watched it with a sort of church group thing.)

i don't think ben controls smokey at all. i think he possibly has a way of calling and/or releasing it, but the way he said the whole "run for the tree line and don't look back", or something to that effect, meant that he knew smokey would be busy killing the grunts, but that it wouldn't take long for it to finish and come after them. just seemed like he feared it, but was familiar with it, like if you lived in the jungle near lions or something.
