I never understood the point about being a purist about adaptations of literature (as opposed to of children's TV or comics books, in which case I'm still not a purist, but . . . the dynamic IS different somehow) (we know G. is a descendent of Cain, but book canon is silent on the father issue, isn't it?), so it sounds like I'd like it. Except maybe you liked it for reasons that wouldn't appeal to me, especially if you compare it to 300 (which I haven't seen but I don't expect I would like). What genre would you consider it in?
If I see it, I will let you know. But I think your statements have just doubly-ensured that I'm probably not, in fact, going to see it. I can much more happily waste my money on Nightmare Before Christmas in ZOMG 3D. At least 300 had mostly-naked dudes, not fur-clad Anthony Hopkinses.
Also, although the poem was in Old English, technically they should be speaking Old Norse, since it's set in parts of Sweden/Denmark, circa 600 AD. But since Grendel and his Mom are, you know, the descendants of Cain or whatever, they probably are supposed to speak some kind of ancient evil demon language thingee. Which obviously would sound like German. Because German is evil. :D

I would say it was an action/adventure/fantasy. Lots of fighting giant monsters and such.
