Oooh, I hope it comes there, and if so, I am coming to visit you in 10 years. Woot! (OTOH, I think it's running against Berlin, so we could go there instead!)
There is no "almost always a drain on the host city rather then a benefit" it is a case, in the modern era of it always having been such a huge money sucking beast that host cities end up paying through the nose for years to come and are left with a bunch of structures that really don't have much use after the events are over. Atlanta is the exception to that statement but only because they got corporation aka Coca Cola to pick up the big item expenses. Add to that the long term disruption with no long term benefits and it's a bad idea all the way around.
My question is, Boston? Because if we held the Olympics in Stoughton or Burlington, or someplace out 495, it might be okay, but Boston -- no.
The real problem with the DNC was that they shut down THE ONLY NORTH-SOUTH HIGHWAY THROUGH THE CITY. For six days (I think). The Pike they only shut down the middle-in parts of during the afternoon/evening, but 93 was just closed. So it was like, okay, you don't want us to use our city while you're here? Fucking fine. We'll all go on vacation and leave you to it. (And rent out our apartments exorbitantly to Swedish journalists, if we have any forethought.) It was a financial disaster for the city, because everybody who usually commutes in just... didn't.
You told us it would suck and we took your word for it and prepared accordingly. Duh! Did you not notice you were dealing with Yankees?
