How do you even get people to keep coming? Lie to them and/or recruit people mired in horrible poverty, I suppose.

Certainly the poverty played a role, plus the thoughts of quick riches for those who weren't impoverished, but also the kind of universal communication we have now, especially trans-ocean, didn't exist, and what there was was in the hands of those who had good reason to stress the riches and downplay any negatives. The impoverished would have no way of knowing the dangers, only that it had the chance to be better than what they had.

Good Steve point. I agree. I actually LOVE that Steve appears to have no angst about killing at all. Perfect soldier indeed. But yes, that can be a hair's breadth from problematic.

I read a story once where Steve goes to - Clint, maybe? - and is all, uh, why is everyone asking if I'm upset about having killed someone? They... know what WWII was like, right?
