Well, my mental state must be better than I thought...

...since I'm currently filling out an online dating profile and have at no time been tempted to say anything like "I am a wretched malformed mutant and God hates me." (Hee hee hee. So funny.) Go me! Mind you, it's unlikely anything will come of it, but at least my overwhelming pessimism is focusing on that instead of my malformed mutantness ( Read more... )

Oh, man, I so hear you.
When I was in grad school I briefly tried an online dating service thing and ended up making Firefly references in my profile - figuring if you didn't get sci-fi references, I didn't want you...not so much with the getting anywhere.

(and I get the liking the people you have thing)

good luck!

Yeah, exactly. I liberally sprinkled in geek references, so that if that's going to scare them off, they can be scared off right away.

I kind of hung up on "Jack O'Neill" and "suave," but maybe someone else will do better than I did.

Not so much. These things are not like peanut butter and jelly. *g*

Oh thank God. I went and looked at a list of episode titles hoping to jog my memory, but I just couldn't think of suave Jack scenes. I thought I was a bad fan. I mean, he's hot, but not suave.

He's suave. It's just a kind of Rico Suave.

Which, of course, would be the soundtrack to the vid, unless you decided to go for maximum irony and used "Puttin' on the Ritz."

"Hot," sure. "Cool," maybe occasionally. But "suave," no. I mean, you know I love me some Jack, but...

Well, hey! You're braver than *me*! I salute you. (And oh my god, do I hear you on the whole "no new people, I like the people I have" problem. It's like, great -- manufacturing anxiety about the integration of a HYPOTHETICAL romantic partner into an existing social group! Good one.)

I had to think a bit, and I think you totally have to bend the definition of "suave" (Jack is the ANTI-SUAVE; it's one of the reasons he charms me, really), and it helps that she was asking for "trying and failing", but I was able to go over there and make *some* suggestions. I just don't know if they'll be at all useful to her. Still, momentarily fun to try to think of it.

I know! Jack's issues are many, but trying to play cool is very rarely one of them.

:::hugs::: I know what you mean about liking the people already. And you're very brave. :)

Don't WANNA be brave.

I feel your pain on that one. And the thing is...we don't have to be brave. Which might not make a lot of sense...but I'm trying to articulate that my definition of brave is that it requires being rather scared of many things and still making the choice to take whatever that next step forward is. Or not, because sometimes it takes just as much guts to say, well, *no*. Hopefully this isn't too convoluted, it's something that I find nearly impossible to write, much easier to speak. *hugs*
