"You and me and the English Channel"

Before all the Dad drama occurred (he's still in hospital but he was much more alert yesterday than I've seen him for a while) I said I would do a post about our pre-Bank Holiday outings. J took Thursday and Friday off before the Bank Holiday so we did a couple of fun things ( Read more... )

Glad to hear your dad's better, and OH, thanks for posting these pics! So beautiful, and Sherlock's cottage! *quiet squee*
I want to go to England now.

Actually I'm not sure you want to be here right now as the weather is *vile*. Come when it's warmer :)

Glad you enjoyed the pictures and Sherlock's cottage made me squee too.

Just a little way away from the Tiger Inn we stumbled across the very attractive cottage Pendrills and I was rather surprised to read that this is believed to be the house that Arthur Conan Doyle intended to be the place that Sherlock Holmes retired to keep bees. It's not quite as famous as 221B Baker Street but it does have a plaque commemorating it as Sherlock Holmes's home. It is quite hard sometimes to remember that Sherlock Holmes isn't actually real and the plaque gives no indication that he was a fictional character as it says "SHERLOCK HOLMES Consulting Detective and Bee keeper retired here 1903-1917".

Interesting!

I'm not quite sure where they got the dates from as I thought he was a bee keeper in the 1920s, but I'm not an expert!

Glad to hear that your dad is a little better.

Great pictures. I wouldn't go near the cliff edge, though. Too afraid of heights!

I wouldn't be able to look straight over but I don't mind if there's a certain amount of distance between me and the edge.

Dad is a little better, thanks. Now we're just waiting to see when he's going to come out of hospital.

Fortnum and Mason's decorations are charming and Beachy Head and East Dean are gorgeous. Sherlock's cottage might not do for our modern Sherlock, but I can totally see ACD's detective settling down there.

Yes, I could see ACD's detective there too. I was trying to think of a modern equivalent of retiring to keep bees but couldn't come up with one.

Fortnum's decorations were great fun. They had them in the window too but the reflections were too strong for me to take a photo.

Glad your father's doing better, and thanks so much for the photos -- esp the Fortnum and Mason decorations. :-)

Dad's seemed quite a bit better the past few days. I hope it lasts and he can come out of hospital as he's reached the bored stage now.

Fortnum's decorations were great fun. They had the beasts in the window too but the reflections got in the way of taking photos of them.

Many hugs back :)
