Holy Crap.

Oct 16, 2003 13:59

I just picked up all the spinning stuff from liralen. HOLY FREAKIN CRAP. I am now up to my ears (practically literally) in fiber and roving.

There's no way around it. At some point, I'm going to need to rent or buy a wheel.

And now if you'll excuse me, I have to go PLAY! IN! WOOL!

I now have an image of you sitting on top of a mountain of wool... ;)

This image you have is not entirely inaccurate.

I was there. It's a pretty darned good image. I walked in and there was all this stuff in the living room and I said "wow" and it was maybe 1/4-1/3 of the total haul. MOUNTAIN OF WOOL!

My mom is an expert spinner, she's done it for years and she is also part of a guild that meets 1ce a month to spin. Homespun wool is totally amazing, nothing like storebought.

Anyway, let me know if you're interested in meeting her. I mean, you met her at the wedding and all, but if you want to I'm sure she'd spend some time with you.

Oh! yeah.. sorry.. for batts. I like running every batt through twice. First time to pick up the raw locks (feed in less than you think you should). Then, when I get that first batt off, I tear it into four or six strips, spread them out, and then feed them all back in again. It results in a very smooth batt with even distribution of all the fiber lengths.

I actually have a whole freaking dye studio set up in the garage already, for the silk scarves. Fortunately acid dyes work on both silk and wool!

You sent me 3 batts of something china blue and silk-like, and one batt of the same in emerald green. Is that silk?

emmacrew is going to let me babysit her wheel for a while to see if I like it.

John packed several picks.

I'm getting to the point with the drop spindle where the resulting yarn looks like something you might actually want to knit with. I'm very pleased with myself. One more skill that will get me into the fortress with the cool kids when the Apocalypse happens.
