Eureka!

There's an review by Christopher Kelly of "this new hit drama about high school football could be great-and not just television great, but great in the way of a poem or painting"* Friday Night Lights in the January 2007 issue of Texas Monthly, and he finds a way to describe the show like I haven't been able to for months.

ok, folks...i happen to be a fan of the show, i think it's fun to watch. and kate, you of all people should know that SO MANY TOWNS in Texas are EXACTLY like this show! i don't think it's an insult to Texas, and people will think what they will about us with or without a show like Friday Night Lights. do you think every show/movie you see about NYC is how things are there? or in East LA? movies and television are all about the stereotype because that's what people want to see. i think the show is more interesting A) if you watched it from the beginning and B) if you like football. I like the characters, and no, it's not the most clever show on television, but it's not shit.

Is "you, of all people, should know that SO MANY TOWNS in Texas are EXACTLY like this show!" the Kate comment? And I do find it insulting to Texans that the only depictions are the ones of the stereotypes I mentioned before. No one writes about the people who aren't like the characters in the show. I just feel that all the reviews seem to act as though the show reveals "true Texas" to the nation, when there's an enormous demographic missing. And it does bother me that some of my friends -Holly, you just happen to be the only one who reads my LJ- don't feel the same way ( ... )

I finally figured out what I was trying to say...The SHOW does not stereotype because it is simply about one small Texas town. This depiction is right on the money as far as small town Texas is concerned, at least for the most part. The REVIEWERS are the ones who are telling the whole nation that this is what Texas is, which is wholly untrue. But at no point during the show does anyone say this is how all Texans are. The people who are reviewing Friday Night Lights are the people you should be blaming, not the show itself. And don't say that if a show like this wasn't on TV that there wouldn't be such a big problem...if not this show then another one, am I right? :) So I understand what you're saying but I think your disdain is misplaced in the show as opposed to the morons who are spreading lies about how this is "real Texas."

*I kinda wish we were having such a heated convo about the travesties in Darfur, but alas...*
