The Kissy-Kissy Scenes

Oct 02, 2010 15:38

I just reached a point in my manuscript revisions where my CP Jess informed me on her first read that she was "campaigning for a kiss." So, being the obliging writer that I am, and because, IMHO, she's "Queen of Kissing Scenes" (and totally right, as usual), I edited the beginning of that particular chapter, hit the part where the kissy-ness goes ( Read more... )

There's a fabulous kissing scene between Zara and her (already-)boyfriend in a library in Carrie Jones's Captivate. (I think it's somewhere in the first third of the book but can't narrow it down any further, since I listened to it as an audiobook!) I was really impressed by how sweet and sexy it was at the same time as having the definite feel of being part of a long-term relationship.

Ooh! Yes, Captivate! *peers at bookshelf* My copy is, apparently, still in TX with my bff. But I will def. re-read that scene when I get it back :) I love Carrie's writing. Thanks for reminding me!

This is a something I struggle with as well. I always feel like a kissy scene needs to be one of the most organic parts of the story. Forced kissing scenes are a big pet peeve of mine in YA. (Which only makes me work on my own that much harder. But it’s a catch-22, the more I revise a kissing scene the less natural it seems).

One of the first books I read as a young teen that approached kissing in a way I thought seemed realistic was "The Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman" by Louise Plummer. I haven't read it since I was about 12 but I remember reading it and thinking what a wonderful thing kissing seemed to be. :)

No, TDL isn't really romance. Actually, that scene is revenge, I believe... I read that scene for general hotness. I have a thing for Nick & kissing ;-) Also, Nick & no shirt. And various other Nick-related activities... *drifts off* Er, right. Yes. Books. TDC has a bit more romanticizing to it, since it's Mae's POV.

*adds BEFORE I FALL to list* Thanks for the rec! I know I've seen it but it hasn't really been on my radar. I'll def. pick it up.
