So... I have a lot of books. Well, maybe not a lot by certain standards, but according to my spreadsheet I have 2150. In a 1100 sq. foot house

You know how many books you have? A spreadsheet? I'm impressed.
I'm totally NOT that organized. In fact, one of my biggest pet peeves about myself is that I'm forever loaning out books (b/c when I love a book I INSIST that everyone read it) but then I forget who has it.
The spreadsheet started from having to move right before I started my first semester of grad school & me needing to know where my books were. It sorta snow-balled from there...
I'm still kinda bad about remember who I loaned books to, though. I sometimes use a tag in librarything, but usually I forget... But since my BFF moved to TX, when I send her books now I write the titles on a post-it & stick it to the shelves!
I cannot emphasize enough how much a home-built library can aid in book organization purposes. Whenever mine's done I'm SO having a library opening party. :)
Uh-huh. Rub in the library, Amie. You know how jealous I am!! :) I'm esp. jealous of your stair-quality shelves. My cases are nearly all cheap-y ones & bow like crazy!
This might seem to be an odd thing to take away from your blog, but how do you format your spreadsheet? I'm a bit OCD about that stuff and I want a nice spreadsheet with all my books in it, but I am not sure what to put in it.
Sorry you're out of space. I wish I had enough books to have that be my problem. Someday!!
Hi Autumn- I'm not really fantastic with spreadsheets (unlike my hubby) but I can tell you about mine. It really depends on what you want to keep track of, but my headings are:
Author Illustrator Editor Title Series Number in Series ISBN (for my old books, copyright year or Library of Congress number) Edition (which I've stopped keeping track of) Category (for me, usually YA, Children's or Fantasy) Awards (Newbery, Caldecott, etc.) Read (Y/N/Some)
...and then I also have headings for if I've added the book to my Librarything account, Facebook, shelfari, etc. & if I'm supposed to be reviewing it for something. I also use a ton of tags over on Librarything to keep track of things like character names, settings, themes, etc., but I don't put those in the spreadsheet (yet...)
