I did try that at first, but I didn't get the truly terrified sense of him almost saying it under his breath without the 'oh' bit. Still, I might play some more. Thanks.

Either "Oh, shit," or a simple "Fuck." I prefer the latter, myself -- it sounds more Lyle-ish.

Thank you! I have to say I thought the former was more Lyle, but when I tried to say it in the American voice in my head (don't even ask!) I wasn't sure if 'shit' was that common.

Shit, fuck, hell, damn... all commonly used American swear words.

Take my opinion for what it's worth, but use the word you're most satisfied with. Our ideas of Lyle might be slightly different, but that doesn't mean either of us is wrong.
