Summary: Have you ever wondered what happens to those the Doctor leaves behind?
Characters: Donna and the Doctor (Ten)
A/N: This was also written for the twenty-fourth weekly drabble challenge with the prompt ‘sleep’.

Donna Noble will never know what it is about the blue box standing on the street corner that attracts her attention. She will never understand what it was about that innocuous if out-of-place object that made her go over and smooth a hand down the painted wood of the door.

She will only ever remember that as the instant that the pain hit.

Dropping to her knees, she presses her fingers to her temples with a groan that explodes into a scream as lights burn behind her eyes.

The creak beside her would have gone unnnoticed if it hadn't somehow sparked recognition in the depths of her mind, before she's once more distracted by the agony, which somehow only seems to grow.

“Donna!”

Gentle hands brush over her face as she lies in a heap on the ground, one hand pressed to her forehead, cool skin a relief when hers feels as if it's burning.

“Oh, Donna, I'm so sorry.”

Help me.

She wants to scream those words at him, but all she can do is whimper as the pain, impossibly, seems to get worse.

And then she feels him lift her into his arms, air moving around her face as she's clearly carried somewhere, before being placed on a soft surface, that cool hand coming to rest once more on her forehead.

“I'm going to try, Donna.” There's a quiver of fear in that half-familiar voice. “Try to do what I couldn't last time. But I'm going to get rid of the pain first. And if I can't,” the shaking in his voice increases, “then I won't make you suffer anymore. I promise.”

There's a faint pinprick in her arm and then she feels a sense of numbness begin to creep along her body.

“Sleep, Donna.” The voice in her ear is soft and gentle. “Escape from all that pain. I won't leave you alone.”

The last words are already becoming fuzzy, and Donna can only feel that the pain in her head is beginning to ease. As she fades away into the blissfully pain-free darkness, the last coherent thought is that, as one more word caresses her ears, she knows something's not right.

“Donna...”
