Apocalypse Cookbook

Those of you who know me well know I am a right-wing conspiracy nut. I've pretty much been convinced for quite some time that there is going to be some sort of government-induced collapse of the system and we are all going to be thrown into chaos. As of recently, I've been able to let go of the notion that it's going to be by a zombie plague ( Read more... )

Sadly, I don't have storage space.

SERIOUSLY. Part of my master plan is to get into one of these old houses out here that have root cellars and all that, and I'll be lining the shelves with jar after jar after jar...Winter falls...snow blankets the earth, the kitchen smells of the warm bread rising in the oven. And I am in the cellar trying to decide, do I wish to enjoy blackberry, strawberry or apricot jam on my fresh bread, as I read the paper about the cities burning to the ground and the tanks rolling in....

rule-ish thing #1) be at least 3+ days walk from any major city
rule-ish thing #2) be as close to the food source as you can be.

Seeing as I'm in Texas, I'll be feasting on corn fed beef and the beautiful grains north of me while you are are rationed to hell. HA HA :(

Bullshit, I live in Champaign! I'm surrounded by farms! And most of the houses have yards for decent gardening, I'd have no trouble trading some nice fresh pies and preserves for a nice hunk of beef. Not to mention I have also gotten a bicycle and I am hauling ass all over town now, so I'd have little trouble with the no-car issue. A three mile ride out of town is all in a day's work, especially if I need to get food. Plus, I have lots of guns and I would blast anyone who came around trying to pirate my stash.

If I thought Jimm could get a comparable job out in the hinterlands where I could get my several acre house with cellar and bee hives, I'd be right down there with you, trying to re-create grandpa's pickle recipe and trading you beeswax candles for a turn with your mill.

However, financial districts tend to be in big cities.

Try to see if your big house + root cellar has it's own well. That also might be helpful when the power stations go out. Old Victorians might have them, just a matter of getting the pumps active.

Oh, and keep a room ready in case we show up in the middle of the night loaded for bear.

Yeah, I think of that often. "Hm. Carrie and Jimm plus kids. One big, strong dude, two soon-to-be big strong dudes and someone with lots of outdoorsy experience. Good to have in the bunker." I was thinking about the water thing, I'm pretty much drinking well water as it is now, minor filtration by the city but there's no doubt it's well water. And, really, it's not bad at all. I'd pay attention to that sort of thing if I was to really get into this whole thing.
