Friday Reading Roundup

At the gym this morning, I listened to Neil Gaiman's "How to Talk to Girls at Parties". First, I have to confess, I somehow missed the fact that he's British and, er, he's fabulous and now I'm sad that I've never gone to hear him read in person. Second, it's a charming story and Kate recommends. I should check out what else is up for a Hugo - I ( Read more... )

Im sure that we can get Ringo to sit on a panel at Frolicon. The topic will be: "Writing about tying up pretty girls, beating them up, and then having sex with them as means to get pretty girls to ask you tie them up, beat them up, and have sex with them."

ha! that does capture the "mary sue much?" response i had after reading "ghost." and while his writing is compelling enough that i did finish the book... my response is mostly "OMG NMK" (neither politically nor sexually).

I must admit, my response was "OMG TMK," both politically and sexually. Still, I see your point. My LJ entries about Ringo are tagged "Mary Sue-USN (Ret.)."

Out of all the author readings I've ever been a party to in my 11 years as a book retailer, Neil Gaiman was one of only two writers (the other being James Ellroy) who was unquestionably worth ninety minutes of anyone's time.

Do you listen to books while you run? If you do, I cannot recommend highly enough a benefit concert called "The Wavedancer, um, I don't remember what the last word was, but it was something like concert or benefit or tribute. I found it on Audible. Anyhoo, Stephen King reads a story that is absolutely hysterical.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever been to an author reading outside of a classroom, but now when coraline mentions he's around, I might.

Sometimes. I'd been listening to some H.P. Lovecraft stories for a while, but otherwise I stick with music. I think it connects with a deeper, more reptilian sector of my brain so I can "get" it without having to pay as much attention as I do with fiction.

But I can only listen to stuff for the first four miles or so. After that I just find my iPod to be a distraction rather than a help.
