Sick people. Running distractions. Seasonal guests.

I'd never noticed before that my father and I only talk on the phone when we need to pass urgent information or bc we need to advocate something. Which is fine, except that I felt like I ought to call him, instead of just talking to my mum, but when I have nothing to convey and he doesn't want to convey anything but mentions what he's been up to, ( Read more... )

I find people want different things when they're sick. Reaching out and knowing they're not alone seems to be high on the list when they're recuperating. It might be that your dad would love to hear about you and how you're doing and let you ramble on a bit. It might let him feel closer to you at a time he wants that, even if usually he's happy to get updates from your mom. (I have found this to be true with my dad. Your dad might be completely different?) I would suggest calling him and saying "hey, I bet recuperation is kind of boring. Want to hear about this trip/race/dinner I am planning, or would you rather rest and just get the updates from mom later?" What feels like babble to you, might feel like a reassurance that the little girl he loves is doing well and he doesn't have to worry about you, but can live vicariously through your happiness and adventures. If you're the one telling about your world, you don't have to worry about coming up with the right response. :)

These are very very good points. Thanks. I guess my problem is, I've been very boring lately, and told him everything cool that I'd done when I spoke to him last Sunday. Since then, all I've done is watch tv :)

Sad! You should never make a scone wait.

I've never made cornbread scones, but if you have a recipe I'd be willing to consider it.

I have recipes galore. It's just scary bc of the whole not letting the butter warm thing.

Your dad is a guy. As a rule, phones are for the exchange of urgent information, that's all. In this case, what you want to communicate is, "Dad, I love you, I'm concerned, I care." You do this by calling him, making about 12.68 seconds of small talk about weather, sports, or your siblings, and then hanging up. Actually saying "Dad, I love you, I'm concerned, I care" is optional, depending on your family custom. Whether you say it or not, the message will get through.
