Spending so much time at my parents' house meant I saw my father declining up close. In the 9 months since Lexan's birth, I watched my dad go from mostly alert, except in the evenings or when he was having a bad day, to never having good days. How does a lone duck survive?

Many of them don't. The obits are filled with stories of high double digit spouses who pass within a short time of each other. Their marriage was such a binary star that neither sun had an orbit without the other.

But a surprising number actually thrive.

What a tough time for you. Hugs all around. Old people are funny, some stick around though you don't know how and others you thought would don't. I hope your ex-boss's wife can find her way.
