I really enjoyed that one too, and like yourself I have no idea other than dumb luck how he lived through it. I do think that he knows what a stupid idea that all was; I read it as him playing up his earlier naivety for humor value, now that we know that nothing actually bad happened to him. Somehow.

That book's been on my "To Read' list for a while now. thanks for
reminding me of it again. Sounds like he was incredibly lucky to worm
his way into that gang.
