Well, another surprise in the wonderful world of kittens - Squirt, the kitten formerly known as Frack, is in fact, female. We never looked all that close as most ginger moggies are male but we decided to make sure before taking her to the vet. At least we were spared the embarrassment of HIM telling us! Female is unusual for marmalades. I assumed Squirt was male too. We've had several ginger kitties and they are/were all male. Squirt seems to be settling into the household in fine kitten fashion. The energy and delight is like nothing else. Hope she settles down about the food, for her sake and for the sake of the other kitties.

I know of 3 litters of kittens in the last yr that had several female gingers and 2 had males that have a calico/tortie look to them. I have wondered about the gender change since gingers used to be most often male and it was rare for calico/torties to be male.

Ginger females are much more common than calico/tortie males, but both do happen.

Consider the source, but to me it seems like there are many more orange females than there used to be - I'm thinking back 20-25yrs ago here. And a male tortie was practically unheard of outside a breeder.
I guess I could research it, heh. But it still surprises me some when there is a ginger female, I still expect it to be rare. We don't have litters of kittens in our house, our babies are all fixed, but the past couple of yrs seem to know too many ppl who aren't fixing their cats and then they are dealing w/ kittens that are hard to find homes for just b/c of the excess of kittens available.
