Life is too short to live without poetry.

Sweet sassy molassy, I am sore. Todd and I went to the Flogging Molly concert in Indianapolis and I think it's safe to say that I haven't jumped around that much in a long time. My body is not used to all that white girl flailing. The concert was awesome; they played all the old standards and did "Seven Deadly Sins" for their encore. Security was ( Read more... )

\o/ for music and Toni Morrison! I read The Bluest Eye in high school (wow, was it that long ago? now I feel old XD) and rather enjoyed it.

I'm struggling with Beloved because of the darkness of the subject matter (which is totally understandable and, I think, expected). Her prose is just so vivid. I've not read anything else that she's done. How was The Bluest Eye?

*pardon my seemingly Hugh-only icon set, I'm down to just the 6 b/c ye olde paid time ran out and i'm not up to renewing it - LJ!fail*

Ahem - anyway....

The Bluest Eye was pretty good. I don't remember a lot of it, but it was an interesting read. The only thing I *really* remember is a line from the little girl about watching mommy (or auntie - I can't recall which) 'get the cakes drunk'. Whomever it was was making rum cakes, so they were 'drunk cakes'. And it's just one of those images that won't go away. Her writing style is... intriguing and different. And her subjects are frequently intense, from what I understand.

See - now I wanna go find the book and try to read it again. *eyes calendar wondering if there's time before Changes comes out in April* XD

I'm almost halfway through Beloved and I'd recommend it very highly if you ever clear your calendar enough to schedule a new read. XD

Beloved is my pick for the Great American Novel - the effect the term 'rememory' has had on academic discourse around transatlantic diasporas and genocidal reckonings honestly can't be overestimated. There's not a single misstep in that book.

I'm a little less than halfway through it now. We were assigned to begin the novel over our Spring Break, so we have not had a chance to discuss it in class yet. I'm really looking forward to seeing how my professor structures a discussion.

Cannot wait to spend some time with you and our kids, sweetheart. Even more glad that you had a great time.

Todd and I agreed that we both needed this kind of a break, so it was wonderful to be able to cut loose and have a good time without worrying (for once).

'Still have this week's episode to watch, don't we? :D And I've got to watch the Ben-centric episode of LOST that aired tonight!

Toni Morrison is love.

My World Lit professor talks about Beloved all the time (one of my favorite books)...someone made a comment that she talks as if she knows her. She held up her iPhone and showed that she has her in her address book.

*crickets*

"I go to her birthday parties."

*jaws drop further*

"I'm not going to call her."

*classroom groans*

Ha ha! That is awesome.

I wonder what birthday parties at a Nobel Laureate's house are like.
