AWWWWW...Not only charming, CathyKate, but the demo is so informative. Great that you finally figured out WHAT Fiona wanted, even though not WHY. annie
That was awesome. I love seeing your work as it progresses from sketch to finished piece. It's very useful to me to see how other artists work and think "Oh, so that's how that's done. Neat!" and then toddle off and hopefully use that bit of knowledge myself one day. It's a wonderful thing and a wonderful painting. It really captures that little kid wistful innocent look. Beautiful!
Just beautiful!

I would have known this was yours even had it not been on your blog! You have such a wonderful touch for these types of portraits - be they solemn, wistful, pensive, or just plain - quiet.
Thanks so much for the step by step and I think one of the things I gleaned most was your CAREFUL observation to get the essential likeness. So very well done!

I must confess that it gave me hope to know that someone I admire so greatly had to make a few "adjustments" and doesn't always get it right! I think we sometimes believe folks don't make mistakes because we only see the good stuff.) I couldn't have possibly done something this good, this quick, in those circumstances, but one day, I might just get there.
I so appreciate that you've shared the needed changes as well as the steps to this wonderful portrait.

Oh, my, yes--I make a LOT of mistakes in perception. I'll think something is right, look at it a half an hour later, and think "OOOPS!" I've got several examples of progressions that are even more clear than this one.
I often post things I'm not all that happy with on my Flickr, and usually note why. None of us are perfect...I'm glad it helped!

Maybe some light pencil guidelines to mark where things line up... ;-)
THANK YOU!
