500 words of chapter 3. After far too much *&)^*(^ing around with worldbuilding AS USUAL. I think I'm running out of possible stuffing around now, though - I have a rough map of every planet mentioned in the story so far. Astronomy nomenclature is insane! Systematise, you bastards! What the hell does "CI 20-1290" even mean?! Nothing, that's what ( Read more... )

Astronomy is systematic... but there are just so many systems. :3

Where did you find CI 20-1290? If I google it I get six results. None of them are academic, either.

I have a friend I need to introduce you to. He's an amateur astromoner, and might be able to explain the nomenclature.

Also, in case, you don't go back to your blog entry on PoC and DRW, here's a link for you

HOW DID YOU WORK THAT OUT ZOMG

I got it from here - the position and other details are extremely similar - but I gave up before I got around to comparing different lists of nearest stars, and just went with Lacaille 8760. Mind you, the more, the merrier!

I found the same list that you did, which had other data that could be used to identify the star (you aren't going to have two stars at the same distance with the same coordinates), and nexstarman cross-referenced it in Starry Night.

I've been meaning to email you re Starry Night - I now have the Core thing and the Dim Stars, although GJ 832 (and its various other names) don't show up in "Find". I've got the hang of the thing sufficiently for my purposes. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

Astronomers are worse than museum curators - it's our galaxy so you'll use our terminology!!

Bastards.
