Perhaps only have generic 'how-to-vote' leaflets handed out by the AEC, that actually show you how to vote, rather than how to vote for a particular person/party.

That strikes me as an excellent idea: due to the number of candidates in most electorates and our preferential voting system, I think some advice on how to vote would be useful.

I was in the US during their 2004 election, staying in a hostel that was being used as a polling place, and was struck by the lack of anything resembling how-to-vote cards... but in their system, there are fewer candidates, and people who haven't already decided how to vote aren't required/expected to vote. (We did, however, have to take down anything that might be interpreted as anti-Bush from the hostel noticeboard).
