The Flamingo Flame ... ?

Hee hee hee. I have Gatchman vol 1 and it's got awful English subtitles. (Not that you can't largely follow the story without them.) I'm currently watching The Phantom Boat From The Hell and wondering why the heck so much entirely innocent animation (Princess and Keyop Jun and Jinpei waterskiing, Jason Joe looking cool in shades, etc) was lopped ( Read more... )

That's because Jason/Joe was to hot for children's Tv? I think honestly they wanted to sell the show on the phony inserted R2D2 theme and from what I understand Jinpei had a pretty nasty mouth on him, which was why they gave him a speech issues (not sure if this rumor is true, but it is amusing). They were filling in for all his swearing....

Not unless there's a lot of unsubtitled Japanese cursing - which is entirely possible! No sign of the rumoured pornography, either... which is a shame, 'cos yeah, Joe is too hot for television. >:)

Well, I do remember June/Princess kicking Spector Clones in the balls and eggs cracking each shot.... But I don't think that happened enough to qualify be seen as porn... It is a shame, seriously, at least we can get to see Joe out of those bell-bottom-baseball shirt combos they wore in the new subs. :)

If you'd like, I'll try to get an answer from the horse's mouth. :)

My take? Fear of censorship, worries over "too adult" storylines, and the aforementioned attempts to capitalize on "robots are cool!" stuff. Kids programming in those days was dire. They were still trying to break into a market that clung to the "cartoons are only for kids" mentality, and the people in power were the same idiots who thought the comics code was the best thing ever.

I have the first four seasons of that show and I find that due to poor subtitles, it's actually tougher to watch than it should be. The stories, while amusingly dated, are actually pretty good stuff and the show is better than I remembered in many ways.

I'm guessing they only bothered to license like ten minutes of new footage from every episode, so even after they cut out the EXTREME VIOLENCE lololol, they still have to cut perfectly broadcastable stuff. I want to see our heroes swimming with a turtle the size of a Volkswagen! A lot more than I want to see 1-Rover-1, that's fer sure.

I've been experimenting with switching off the subtitles and just watching the damn thing in Japanese!
