Letter in the TWT this week referring to "the extravagant claims made by a section of the screaming popularist (sic) media", ie, the fact of global warming, which has been "exposed by a prominent Australian geologist, David Archibald". As far as I've been able to find out, Mr Archibald works for the oil exploration industry; his theory that sunspot ( Read more... )

I always hate it when people try to take advantage of the public's misconception that "a scientist is a scientist, of course, of course" and that any scientist is qualified to comment on anything scientific.

Reminds me of an anti-evolution TV special I once saw where the scientific expert espousing creationism was some sort of JPL engineer. He might literally have been a rocket scientist, but that doesn't mean he knew a darn thing about biology . . .

Hmm... I heard this theory being discussed at uni before but fortunately with less extravagantly screaming words.
Though one thing: There are more than enough people working in the oil industry who actually are specialised in climate research, and many other types of geological and geophysical research. Don't know this Archibald chap though. I'm just an ordinary exploration gal. Maybe I should have done a Phd after all and waited for the 'here's a little fortune salary. do us some research' call :D
