1. for the most part, people generally believe that adverse consequences only happen to other people.

2. abstinence works "every time" - every time a given person abstains. condoms can and do fail, but they are highly reliable if used correctly. obviously a rapist isn't going to abstain, but i don't think he's likely to stop and put on a rubber either.

1. Sadly, very true, especially when it comes to teenagers.

2. Rapists are increasingly likely to use condoms nowadays, mostly for fear of their DNA being identified. It's part of the 'CSI effect'.

While I'm immensely irritated by these claims about condoms, they're not quite as stupid as claims that giving a cervical cancer vaccine to young girls will also encourage promiscuity. That one really pisses me off.

It's such a circular argument. Sex can have adverse consequences, therefore we should avoid sex. We should avoid sex, therefore sex should have adverse consequences.

the underlying argument is much simpler: people shouldn't have sex, unless they're a married heterosexual couple intent on conceiving a child. anyone having sex for any other reason must suffer gruesome punishments (as publicly as possible, in order to terrify other people into avoiding unauthorized sexual activity as well).

and how the fluorescent polka-dotted FUCK the human mind ever came up with that perverted idea, i can't begin to imagine.
