Such a thing as Too Friendly

So an interesting conversation came up in the comments of this post on the Second_Lifers Livejournal group in which a store owner suggested it's rude to ignore a Second Life store owner or employee who greets you while you're shopping. The reason I greet people who come into my store is to let them know that I will not ignore them if they speak to me. So many times I speak to someone who is in the middle of an IM or something. I can't know that so they appear to be not at all interested in their customers. I think that's rude. So I always speak first.

You know, I wonder if it's as simple as saying something like "Hi, Sexycat...welcome to The Prim Underwear Store! I don't want to intrude, but if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help."

How would that feel to someone who generally prefers not to be greeter in stores?
