Week in Review

Work prevented me from working on Boskone reports during the week, though I still fully intend to post them all, really! Part of that was preparing to argue two cases in Rochester on Tuesday morning, for which I'm driving out Monday; the weather looks like it might be lousy, so I am leaving myself plenty of time for the drive.

When I got braces for the second (!) time, I got clear brackets on my front top teeth, so it mostly looked like was wearing a retainer. Apparently they don't advise putting the clear brackets on all your teeth because they're not as strong as the metal ones.

Yeah, I'm going to ask about that. I have fluorosis, meaning hard teeth, meaning I'll be going in frequently to have brackets re-cemented, so I don't know how that will affect things.

The second time! Yikes. I'll bug you for advice and what to expect later on.

I think that for the lower teeth, it might be an option for the braces to be on inside instead of outside, but I'd think that tongue irritation would be a likely problem. Plus, I don't know if fluorosis might make that impractical.

I forget if this was offered as an option to me. I had standard braces in high school and college.

Yoga is Good. I would say that a little more often is better overall than a lot once a week. The physical exertion varies, and you can change the amount of effort you put into it. As you found with the standing pose, it can be surprisingly difficult: don't forget to breathe. It's often quite difficult (or impossible) to put yourself into the ideal position for a pose from the beginning, and it's a bad idea to push too hard because you'll end up straining something. Using props to approximate alignment is just fine ( ... )

The book has pictures with props and easier variants, which I like. And thanks for the suggestions--I bet I can tape some of these, or ask my former physical therapist for class recommendations around here. The timing might not work out, but it's worth looking into.

Lara gave me a couple of good links the other day. The one I will probably be using most is www.yogatoday.com An hour a day of yoga and you can download them to do later.

Also, I got a mat from Gaiam that has lines on it to help with positioning.

Yes, I was prompted by her post, though I'd forgotten about the downloadable videos.

The lines on a mat might be a good idea, actually.

I'd look into books and DVDs available from your public library and check out both Hatha and Vinyasa (sp?) yoga ( ... )

If you are going to have to have metal braces put on, then ask you dentist about Sure Smile. (Cripes, I sound like a commercial. Oh, well...) I am not a dentist, but Sure Smile was one of the first dental animations I did professionally, so I'm vaguely more familiar with it than most laymen.

With traditional braces, you are having your teeth adjusted twice, with lots of visits for tightening, readjusting, and so on. With Sure Smile, they do a 3D scan of your teeth, feed that info into the computer, and then use that data to pre-bend the wires. This should cut both the time in braces and the number of visits per month in half--that is, assuming the client was giving us truthful information.
