Well in the 70's they were found out to be all bad cause the string that is left for doctors to use to pull it out was made of cotton. Not a surprise that cotton caused infections. They then made the 'string' out of plastic but they had a bad rap so it took a while before anybody would try them.
IUD's arent for everyone and you wont really know until you try it. It kind of has to do with your shape a bit as everybody is different and the bottom part has been known to cause irritation. In some women they find their periods are heavier or what not. It might turn out that I dont adjust to it and end up having it removed.
There is also a risk during the insertion of having your womb punctured which is why they prefer to do it on women who have had children as their cervix is not as tight. This is why a regular doc sometimes wont do it and you have to go to an gynecologist as you may not really be able to have children if some inexperienced doctor fucks up when putting it in.

Huh.. A quick check on Wikipedia says that they're pretty common in France too. Definitely not third world.
