Another way of reading her subsumption into DA!Supergirl, "does it with a smile" Supergirl, is that it was the comic-book equivalent of committing suicide, and she honestly believed that would be best, until she made a decision inside herself and said "I'd rather live with my mistakes, with my screwups," and - I may not have ever seriously considered outright killing myself, but I was willing to let myself just fade away and disappear, just hide in a dorm room and never walk out again because I was too afraid to deal but too afraid to actually kill myself, and seeing Kara go through the same thing made me feel like there was a character out there who could feel the same way as that and they could be a hero.
*nods* I never seriously considered suicide, but my sister did consider it pretty seriously and a couple of my best friends have thought about it pretty seriously and I -- it matters to me that *in canon* a legitimate hero did the same thing.
Because I can say that *Supergirl* went there, fucking *Supergirl*, and it's okay, and it will get better, and it *doesn't mean they're bad people*.
*lots of hmmm noises* I'll definitely have to read that.
BTW, I have a few simultaneous theories about Bruce letting her use the computer: 1. She seeks information and attempts to use the best available resources; that's a trait to encourage in a possible future Superman-level meta, not one to chastise. 2. The fact that she uses his computer makes it much easier for him to know what she's up to, up to and including the biometric scans he does of her every time she enters the cave. 3. He *could* stop her, but it's better for everybody involved if she believes he couldn't. After all, she has Problems with Authority. 4. She reminds him of Steph, and of the files he didn't show her, and of what happened because of that.
It's not particularly well-written, but. Yeah. KARA.
I like your reasoning, too. I just... it made no sense for her to have as much free reign as she did, it was one more reason she was a character I didn't like, and now I have reasons and this makes me happy. And makes Kara more palatable.
(I have gotten to where I like her, as you may have noticed, but explaining the Batcave Thing as something besides She Is Universally Adored Okay makes it easier.)
It's one of the single biggest reasons I had such problems with Kara -- canon expected me to believe she was given free rein? In the *Batcave*? Uh-*uh*.
so then she flies back to brooke's dad and hauls him waaaaaaaay up high in the air and says 'so, i went back to brooke, since telling her you died seemed like a good plan, and then remembered something. i'm not allowed to lie. it's an s thing.' the panel where she says that? AWESOME. all narrow gleaming eyes and the s on her chest and she looks fierce and snarky and eeeeeeee. and he's all 'um, okay?' and she says 'glad you understand.' and drops him.
OK, that is beautiful.
So, finally she starts becoming a real girl. This is good news.
I think I may have already told you everything I have to say about Supergirl. :) So, I'll just repeat myself: I may not like Supergirl (despite your best efforts) but I can see why you do, and the potential she has, which I couldn't before.
