(some) coherency, or my position on racefail in The Last Airbender

Jun 30, 2010 15:55

♫ So, in light of the fact that The Last Airbender is being release tomorrow, I've decided to clarify exactly why the movie is full of racefail, why I find it offensive, and why I will still being going to see it so I can make a complete judgement on it (which, yes, I know, defeats the purpose of boycotting the movie for its racefail, but I feel ( Read more... )

<333 such a dignified explanation! this was wonderful. *hugs* though I'd go ahead and suggest you not go, or see it online - I've read multiple reviews, fannish and professional, today, and all of them have said the movie sucks as a movie as well as being racist and sexist. it really doesn't sound like it's worth seeing at all.

Thank you! *hugs back* Yeah, I've heard some truly disappointing things about it. I'm very tempted to not go, but at the same time I really would like to form a definite opinion on it. Dilemma. :\

Before I read this, I just want to say YAY for the fact that you think this movie completely fails...I'd see it to judge it more fairly, but I honestly think there's a lot more to this movie that's gonna completely suck and will kill the spirit of the show, so, gonna pass on seeing it.

This is excellent, Kathy. Also, I'd just like to say Shyamalan's arguments against the racist casting is basically, "I'm not racist, you're racist for noticing anything about the casting!" so basically...'NO U.' lol stfu Shyamalan. His handling of this movie pretty much enrages me.

Yeah. The only thing I think is going to be anywhere near exceptional is the special effects, but with every movie these days having awesome SFX, it's not nearly as exciting as it used to be.

"NO, YOU" is such an immature argument that I wonder if maybe it his daughter (the one who supposedly adored the original cartoon series) came up with it.

This is a fantastic post. I read an interview the other day in which Shyamalan said that his critics were the REAL racists. WTF?

Thank you! And, yeah, I saw that interview too. It made me very upset.

You're welcome! And thank you too for the lovely compliment ♥

Oh, I know. It's like, I'm racist because I am aware of race? Being tolerant does not mean being raceblind, it means being aware of other races but accepting them for whatever they are.

Oh, god, the sexism. It's really depressing to see a show with strong female characters degraded so. D:

I think this is probably one of the most well-written articles I've seen on the subject on LJ. Your explanation was amazing. Thank you for posting/sharing it.
