My sister and I have decided on an impromptu holiday to New York in April - can anyone recommend hotels? We just want a good location, a good price, and good hygiene!

Any ideas? And places to avoid?

I only stayed a few days (not for me, sadly) but I feel I should warn you not to stay too close to Times Square. It's just completely, utterly, unavoidably LOUD ALL THE TIME.

I have to second this whole heartedly. I did not care for Times Square AT ALL.

I haven't stayed at these, but I cut a review out of the paper for the Pod on East 51st St and the Jane in the West Village. Supposedly hip, stylish and (for NY) cheap, though w/tiny rooms and some shared baths.

Thanks for the tips - they both look pretty cool. I didn't want to end up in a bog standard hotel that could be anywhere in the world, but these both look quite unique.

I've stayed at the Dumont Plaza before, and it's a good price and great location. The name might've changed now though.

Thanks for the link! That one might be a bit out of our price range, but another in the same group looks really good. Thanks for the link!

if you want good fake brand name bags, i hard the place to go is canal street.
I'm a backpacker type, so i would just stay at a hostel. :) I went for a wknd where I followed someone else's plans so i couldn't tell ya much. :)

If you're on a higher floor, or down a side street, staying in Times Square is not bad at all. I just stayed at THE TIME on 49th (got it on Priceline) and it was quite nice.

The Pod hotel is teeny, teeny tiny, and is a little far east. If you don't mind walking, though, or teenyness, it's not bad.

Whatever you do DO NOT stay at the Hotel Pennsylvania by Penn Station. DO NOT. It is a horror. It is the reason that I never, ever bid on Priceline for the section of the city that includes Penn Station (it's one of the Midtown sections) because it is always on Priceline and I would sooner sleep on the street than at the HP. (No, I am not exaggerating.)

Chelsea Lodge is decent.
