There was an article, I think in Time, questioning whether or not Glenn Beck was bad for America. Of course the article was horribly written and after a few minitues I couldn't even bring myself to keep reading that, let alone subject myself to the utter idiocy that is his show.
Frankly I suspect while there is racism among those protesting I believe they are (though not by a large margin) the minority of the protesters. I think the majority are people who are merely using the health-care issue as a catch all for their frustration over the economic climate and the feeling of impotence that they have. What is sad is that the government saved a whole lot of jobs and free fall by interfering with the "free market", but then again some of us actually understand economics not this pseudo bullshit spiel about how economics all favor pure free markets and capitalism (which is NOT what they teach in those classes).
But the ones that are toting their guns to the protests, and carrying signs with Confederate flags, while they may not even be overtly racist in their motives, I am willing to bet that at least some of their hatred is based in race-based fear of an "other" being in control of the country.
The latter more so than the former. There are plenty of gun nuts who don't care what color Obama is. Certainly there is a fear of "other" but as far as many of the people down here are concerned, you can be pasty white but if you're a liberal you're not classified as human to them.
