Of Flesh, Fur, and Fang
Chapter Two

"I cannot believe you were at it again," Mr. Park said as he paced back and forth in front of the three students.

"I know but they-" Kyuhyun started but he was cut off when his teacher held up a hand.

"I don't care if he attacked the girls," Mr. Park said firmly.

"But Leeteuk they-"

"No. The girls are strong enough to fend for themselves and although I understand this was a matter of honor, you are neither of their mates therefore you are not bound to stand up for them," Leeteuk responded firmly.

Kyuhyun opened his mouth to voice a reply just as a phone rang. Leeteuk silenced him with a gesture and pulled the cell phone from his pocket. He glanced at the name and made no effort to muffle the voice on the other end; all three students would be able to hear it no matter what he did.

"Jungsoo, is everything alright? I felt you pull on my power a little bit ago," the voice on the other end sounded worried.

"Everything is fine, Youngwoon. Kyuhyun was just at it again," Leeteuk responded giving the teen a pointed look.

"Again?" the question was growled through the device.

"Yes again," Leeteuk pinched the bride of his nose and sighed. "The other students know where to hit to get him worked up and they just love seeing the student at the top of the class lose control."

"Kyuhyun," Youngwoon said calmly and although his voice didn't rise in volume, Kyuhyun could hear it clearly. "Do not get into anymore trouble for the rest of the day. I don't care if someone tries to kill Yoona or Taeyeon you are to do nothing. That is an order. Am I understood?”

"Yes," Kyuhyun muttered.

"Good now get out," the voice on the other end of the phone ordered. All three students stood stiffly and bowed to their teacher before walking from the room. "This was your idea," the voice from the phone sounded gentler with a bit of humor coloring it.

"I know," Leeteuk agreed sinking into his chair. "I'm not going to have them sent to some special school. It's their last year. I can keep them in line."

"Mm," Youngwoon hummed. "Well at least this time Kyuhyun wasn't as out of control. You didn't tap my power for very long."

"That's the thing. Onew came to get me. He said that Kyuhyun was on the edge of losing control of his Beast. By the time I got there Kyuhyun was not only calm but there were two students between him and the offender," Leeteuk explained.

"Two? I assume Key but whom else?"

"Zhou mi our new neighbor," Leeteuk replied. "I couldn't place what he was when I first met him. His smell is off from everything I know. You don't think he could be..." Leeteuk trailed off as if he couldn't finish the sentence.

"What are the chances that Onew was wrong about how far gone Kyuhyun was?"

"He wouldn't be wrong about something like that," Leeteuk responded confidently.

"Then I would say that I think out new neighbor is a Quieter."

“Mother!” Zhou mi called loudly as soon as the front door slammed behind him. “At least three of my classmates and my teacher are werewolves!” he threw his bag down by the front door and followed his nose to his mother’s location, the kitchen.

She smiled at him as he entered the room. “Did you have a good day, dear?” she asked as she stirred some substance in a large bowl. Zhou mi could never be sure whether she was creating dinner or something else whenever she was in the kitchen.

“Did you not hear me? My teacher is a werewolf and an alpha no less!”

“Yes and no,” she replied cheerfully, dipping a finger into the mix and raising it to her lips to sample it.

“What do you mean yes and no?” Zhou mi asked, eyes narrowed.

“Do you think this tastes too sweat?” his mother asked offering him a small spoonful of the substance.

Zhou mi knew she wouldn’t return to his question until he answered so he accepted the spoon and shoved it in his mouth, taking his time to thoroughly clean it before removing it. “I think it is fine,” he told her, handing the spoon back.

“Wonderful,” she said happily. She turned and poured the contents of the bowl into a waiting sheet pan and then moved with it to the oven.

“Now then,” she said as she closed the door and set a timer. “Your teacher is a werewolf but he is not an alpha.”

“But I saw him use the power of an alpha to give a command,” Zhou mi protested.

“Yes dear, how else might he be able to do that?” she asked as she moved about the kitchen depositing dirty dishes in the sink and gathering new ones from the cupboard.

“The only other way would be for him to be the mate of an alpha, but females aren’t alphas,” Zhou mi protested.

“No dear they aren’t.”

“Then how,” she didn’t answer, instead leaving him to ponder it as she moved around mixing something else in a bowl. “Mom werewolves aren’t gay,” he blurted.

He didn’t see her hand move but he knew she was the cause of the wooden spoon that hit him on the head. She scowled at him. “A werewolf is just like a person. They can love whom they chose.”

“But mom, the pack back home was-”

“Was a mere shadow of what a true pack should be, that is what,” she said angrily. “A true pack is a family that accepts all members for whatever they are. A true pack is a beautiful mesh of beast and man. A true pack does not kill a member simply because he admits to finding the same gender pleasing. You will do well to remember that.” Zhou mi swallowed and nodded his understanding.

His mother sighed and placed her utensils on the counter so that she could come around and take his hands in hers. “Zhou mi, darling, your father was a wonderful man before his change, but after it the pack he belonged to was twisted and broken. Just as humans come as good and bad so does everything else, dear. Never forget that power corrupts and to find an alpha with any power that is still pure and good is rare indeed.”

She placed a hand tenderly along the side of his face. “You have nothing to fear from this pack. They will see you for what you are and treat you as you should be treated.”

“But mother, what am I?” Zhou mi asked confused.

She hugged him suddenly, tucking his tall lanky body as close to herself as she could. “You are my son,” she said simply. Then she wrinkled her nose, “and you stink. Go. To the shower with you.” She released him and made a shooing motion with her hands before returning to her concoction.

Zhou mi sighed. He knew that she would offer nothing more to him and lingering in the kitchen would very likely produce largely unwanted consequences. Instead of chancing it, he did as she asked and trudged off to the shower.

He cleansed his body as quickly as he could, and dried off just as fast. Once he was dry he slipped into clean clothing, knowing that his mother would only send him back to get them if he didn’t emerge wearing them. When he trudged back into the kitchen he spun, arms outstretched to show off his newly cleaned state.

His mother nodded in approval and picked up a large box from the counter that had appeared in the time he was gone. “Here dear, take this cake next door. If you hurry you’ll be able to make it to dinner.” Zhou mi accepted the box and looked around his mother to offer the oven a suspicious stare. If he wasn’t mistaken the box in his hands was what his mother had been working on less than a half an hour ago. There was no possible way it could be finished already.

“Don’t think on it too hard dear,” she said with a smile. Then she turned him and gave him a firm pat on the bottom. “Out with you.”

Zhou mi sighed and trudged reluctantly out of the house. After the door closed behind him he thought about heading the other direction, towards the neighbor’s house that didn’t smell distinctly of everything canine. Knowing his luck his mother was watching him like a hawk and would know the moment he deviated from her chosen path.

He sighed and turned the direction she had desired him to go in. Despite his wishes for the ground to swallow him, or for him to trip and break a limb, he arrived unharmed at the neighbor’s front door. Zhou mi was reasonably sure that his mother wouldn’t be sending him over to die, but that didn’t erase the feeling of unease deep in his stomach. Slowly he lifted his hand and pressed the door bell.

His sensitive hearing picked up on what sounded like a brief friendly scuffle in answer to the ring of the doorbell and a few playful shouts. Seconds later the door was opening and Zhou mi was staring into a familiar face.

“Hey, can I,” there was a pause as the teen that Zhou mi was fairly certain was named Kyuhyun tried to puzzle out something. “Help you,” he finished softly.

“Uh hi. My mom sent me over,” Zhou mi said weakly. Then he held up the box almost as a peace offering. “I brought cake.”

“You are going to be so dead when Hankyung gets home,” a young woman practically sang as she carried her armload of various supplies from one counter of the kitchen to the center island.

On the counter Key kicked his legs lazily. “I doubt it. Chances are he won’t even find out.”

She snorted and deposited her armload onto the counter. “Not a chance of that. People in my class were talking about the fact that you brought a weapon of some sort to school. In fact Jonghyun was talking about it. If he knows, then you can bet Heechul will know tonight and guess where Hankyung is going after work.”

Key groaned and thumped his head backwards against the cupboard door. “Well what are we supposed to do Jessica? Let them rule the school?”

“What were you planning on doing? Killing him? That would have worked well,” she countered sarcastically as she arranged the items on the counter.

“I was only going to stab him in the arm or something. The silver would have slowed him down a bit, but the new kid got in the way and nearly got himself killed,” Key grumbled.

“That was strange,” Jessica agreed. “Have you found anything yet?” she directed her question to Henry who was sitting at the table with a huge book open in front of him. Slowly, page by page he flipped through it.

“No,” he said shaking his head, “I’m not even really sure what I am looking for. It’s not like this thing has an index.”

“Key, go help him,” Jessica ordered.

“Why?” he countered, offering her a glare. “It’s not like we can cut the book in half so both of us can look through it together.”

“Just go,” she replied firmly.

He rolled his eyes and muttered under his breath, but jumped off the counter and wandered over to the table anyway. There he pulled out a chair and settled by Henry, scanning the pages with him. Jessica smiled to herself as he obeyed.

Once she was sure he wasn’t going to be any more trouble anytime soon she turned back to the items in front of her. The young woman picked up a sheet of paper and scanned through it once more. Satisfied, she placed it back on the counter beside her workspace and began to add the various items it listed into a large mixing bowl.

“Here, I got the things you asked for,” Onew declared as he entered the kitchen through the side door. He laid the fresh herbs he had collected from the garden on the counter beside her workspace.

“Thank you,” Jessica said fondly. Key looked up from the table and glared at Onew.

The teen sent him a questioning look, which Key ignored in favor of returning to his task. “What is up with him?” Onew asked Jessica quietly.

“Oh he is just dreading the trouble he will find himself in later,” she replied with a smile.

“Oh that,” Onew agreed as he picked up her list to look at it.

“Yes that.” Jessica picked up a large jar of spice and unscrewed the lid. She scooped some of the substance out and then dumped it into the bowl. As it hit the contents of the bowl it released a large poof of spice dust. Onew wrinkled his nose in response to the dust; he sneezed and then disappeared instantly from view.

“Onew!” Jessica protested loudly, for when he had sneezed not only had he gone invisible but anything he had been touching with his skin had as well. This included the table under his one hand and the list in the other.

“Sorry,” Onew’s voice flowed sheepishly from the space near her.

Key turned and took one looked at the miffed young woman and the items that seemed to be floating in mid air and began to cackle hysterically. “Serves you right,” he laughed out. She glared at him and was about to open her mouth when she heard the front door open and close. Her glare turned to a smile as Key continued to laugh completely unaware.

“What is going on here?” the sound of another male preceded him into the room.

“Onew sneezed and went invisible taking my recipe and the table with him which Key seems to think is just hilarious,” Jessica said sweetly.

The Chinese man sighed and he stepped into the room still in his dress clothes from work. “Onew let go of the table and put down her recipe,” he ordered gently.

“Oh yeah, sorry,” Onew replied. There was a moment’s pause and the table suddenly became visible again and a moment later the piece of paper as well.

“Good now just focus on being seen,” Hankyung instructed.

Key laughed again and Hankyung turned to glare at him. “I wouldn’t be laughing yet. What exactly were you thinking?”

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” Key answer sweetly. “Your Korean is awful.”

“Oh really,” Hankyung returned, his smile taking a dangerous edge. “So you wouldn’t happen to know why exactly Heechul was congratulating me on one of our own bringing a silver dagger to school and nearly killing a wolf?”

“Oh that,” Key replied as if had just dawned on him.

“Yes that.”

“How could you have visited Heechul already? It isn’t even dark,” Key asked.

“Contrary to popular belief Heechul doesn’t sleep all day, I’m not even sure he sleeps at all, but you are trying unsuccessfully to avoid the question. The knife,” Hankyung asked flatly.

“I wouldn’t say knife, it was more of a little dagger,” Key replied sweetly.

“Give it to me,” Hankyung held out his hand. Key sighed, fished the blade from his pocket, and laid it in Hankyung’s hand. “Key what were you thinking? This is pure silver, it could have killed him.”

“Me? You should have seen the kid that got between us and just told Kyuhyun to chill. He almost lost an arm. I don’t know what he is, but Kyuhyun listened to him,” Key said.

“I heard about that too,” Hankyung said thoughtfully. “Kyuhyun hasn’t found a mate has he?”

“I doubt it,” Key said with a smile.

“Zhou mi just moved here and he didn’t seem to know Kyuhyun,” Henry added.

“I don’t know if you will find it in there,” Hankyung said, gesturing to the book.

“Great then I can do something else,” Key said with a smile as he stood and stretched as if he had been sitting there for hours instead of just minutes.

“You can. You can head down to the library and search the books there,” Hankyung told him.

Key gave him a look of total disbelief. “What am I supposed to do, ask the librarian if she knows where any books on things that calm a werewolf are?”

“If you think that will work,” Hankyung said with a smile. Key grumbled under his breath. “Oh and you are not getting this back for a very long time,” Hankyung said wiggling the knife. “We have a truce and I won’t have you breaking it by having this.”

“You are only saying that because you are sleeping with the other side,” Key grumbled under his breath heading towards the door.

“Oh and while you are at the library, I have been meaning to write down everything that can be found about fae. Why don’t you take a notebook with you and get to work on that too, in all of your free time,” Hankyung said with a smile. Key offered him a glare before he turned and stormed from the room. The slamming of the door signaled his departure from the house.

Henry looked between the two people in the room who were visible with a bewildered look on his face. “I’m confused,” he said tentatively. “I’m not sure what the phrase ‘sleeping with the other side’ means.”

“It means,” Jessica said in clear English, “That Hankyung is having sex with someone of the other side. I think Key was implying Heechul.”

“Oh, thanks,” Henry answered in Korean, blushing lightly.

Jessica smiled. “Anytime.”

“For the record,” Hankyung said looking between the two of them. “I am not sleeping with Heechul or any of the rest of them.”

“Of course not,” Jessica replied immediately.

“Hey,” Onew called happily as he flickered back into visibility. “I did it.”

Hankyung sighed. “I’m going to go shower, someone clean this up and get dinner started.” He didn’t wait for an answer before walking tiredly from the room.

“Of course. Welcome home Hankyung!” Jessica called after him.
