From the Soul to the Song
Verse Eight
Heechul crashed irritably through the underbrush. “Where did that cat go?! I’m going to skin him when I find him, for leading us all the way out here and then disappearing.”
“Heechul maybe he is trying to teach us something,” Siwon suggested.
The older man turned and shot him a glare. “I don’t think getting lost in the woods is a skill I’m ever going-“ his last few words were cut off as Hankyung crashed into him, knocking both of them to the ground. “What’s the big idea?” he snarled, less than thrilled to be tackled into the dirt and leaves.
Hankyung simply gestured up to the tree right next to where Heechul’s head had been. Its bark was smoldering. “Oh,” Heechul said a bit softer. Hankyung pulled himself from Heechul but remained low to the ground. He placed a hand firmly on Heechul’s chest keeping him on his back on the ground. “For heaven sakes it’s not like there is a monster waiting to get me,” he hissed.
Suddenly he heard flesh impact flesh and his head twisted sideways just into time see someone slam into Siwon and knock him back into the underbrush. In seconds even the sound of their struggling was gone. Heechul’s eyes widened. “Siwon?” he called softly.
“Shh,” Hankyung hissed. He cocked his head sideways as if trying to listen to their surroundings. Despite his efforts he failed to notice the piece of rope that had wound itself loosely around his ankle until it pulled taught and jerked him up into the canopy of the trees where he disappeared among the leaves.
“Hankyung!” Heechul shrieked as a feeling very near terror settle in the pit of his stomach.
In the trees, Hankyung’s eyes widened as he rose high in the leaves and saw Changmin standing on a branch with one of Siwon’s arms twisted around his back and holding a Sai at his throat. “Don’t worry,” he whispered. “We are just trying to make a point to Heechul.”
“Is it necessary for me to be hanging upside down and you to hold Siwon like that?” Hankyung hissed.
“Just giving you back would make the entire exercise pointless. I swear we won’t hurt you permanently. You guys are our friends after all, but just in case, Kyujong and Youngsaeng are on standby just up the hill,” Changmin told them with a smirk.
At his words Siwon began to twist in effort to free himself from the other man’s hold. Changmin shifted his Sai causing the tip to pierce Siwon’s skin and bring forth a trickle of blood. Siwon stilled. “Sorry but we can’t afford to go easy on you. The Dark One’s won’t and you won’t learn if we do. As long as you don’t physically die Kyujong can fix you. I know it sounds harsh-“
“But you’re trying to teach us something,” Hankyung finished irritated. He lifted himself up using nothing but pure strength to attempt to untie the rope around his foot. To his dismay he found no knot, instead it was a smooth loop. He shot a glare at Changmin.
“We aren’t stupid,” Changmin responded with a shrug.
On the ground Heechul had scrambled to his feet and was scanning the trees wildly for any signs of his Singers. Due to this he nearly missed the wave of fire that came at him from his right side. As quickly as he could, he pulled the stored up power from his necklace and wove it into a transparent shield that he threw up to deflect the fire.
The flame cleared to reveal Yunho who was smirking. “You wait until both your Singers are taken, to even start Weaving. I bet you aren’t even working with live power. You are pulling on reserves. Heechul I thought we were past this.”
“Bastard,” Heechul snarled. Now that he could see Yunho, he was no longer fighting an invisible enemy and his fear melted into anger. “Is this your idea of teaching?”
“The way I see it no Dark One is going to come up and tap you on the shoulder to request a battle and then wait for you to get ready. So we can’t either,” the moment he was done speaking, he launched into action.

“Wow,” Donghae breathed as he gazed at the scenery stretched out in front of him. Kanja had taken them to the edge of a blue sandy beach. Once they had arrived she had zipped down to the boys waiting for them at the edge of the water. Hyunjoong had laughed lightly as she circled him and then reached through her bubble to run his fingers down her back. She allowed him to pet her for a moment before she bolted away to go play on the waves.
Hyunjoong let the trio take in the beach and the crystal clear water for a moment more before he gestured for them to come down. Kibum immediately started forward. After four steps he found himself alone and turned to see what was happening. Donghae and Eunhyuk were still gazing in awe at the scenery. Sighing, Kibum retraced his steps to them and grabbed one of their wrists in each hand. “Come on,” he mumbled dragging them both down the beach.
By the time they were half way there the other two had come to their senses and were walking under their own power. “This place is awesome,” Donghae exclaimed excitedly.
Eunhyuk nodded in agreement. “The sand is blue!”
“The south beach has red sand,” Jaejoong told them as they neared.
“Why is the sand blue?” Donghae asked curiously.
“Well,” Hyunjoong began. “There was once a great sea creature. She was the most stunning colors of blue. One day she fell in love with the great creature of the forest. Day after day she watched him as he came to drink from the cool edge of her home. Then one day she worked up the nerve to speak with him. Carefully she crawled out onto the beach of white sand and attempted to have a conversation.”
Eunhyuk and Donghae were hanging on his every word. Kibum, on the other hand, was giving him a slightly skeptical look. “Image her sadness,” Hyunjoong continued, “When she found that the creature she would do anything for could not understand or speak her language. He tried to be polite but there was nothing he could do to understand and he had a forest to attend to, so he returned to his forest. In her sadness she cried out tears of the deepest blue. The tears stained the white sand beneath her as she made her way back into the sea. Day after day she repeated this process and the forest creature still did not learn her language. To this day he doesn’t know it, and the sand is blue because of her tears.”
“Wow that is so sad. She still comes up every day?” Eunhyuk asked.
“Yep every day. You guys just missed her,” Jaejoong replied before he went back to poking around in the waters edge.
“What about the south beach? Why is it red?” Donghae asked.
Hyunjoong shrugged. “There was a huge battle there a long time ago. The blood stained the white sand red.” Eunhyuk and Donghae’s eyes widened while Kibum raised his eyebrow at the man.
“You are water elements,” Hyunjoong said changing the subject. Donghae and Eunhyuk blinked and nodded. “That means that you can work both offence and defense. We’ll start by teaching you how to weave a shield. Who is your Weaver?”
“I am,” Donghae responded.
“What you want to do is take the power that they are giving you and force it out. You want to imagine it forming into something that can stop whatever you want to. We’ll be throwing water at you and it’s your job to keep yourself and your Singers dry. Understand?”
“Uh, yes,” Donghae said still unsure.
“Ok ready?” Hyunjoong asked.
“I don’t know,” Donghae admitted, looking down at his hands in confusion.
“Well the best way to learn is to try it,” Hyunjoong said before he swept out his arm causing a sheet of water to lift from the ocean and head toward the trio.

“There has got to be an easier way to get a hold of this shielding thing,” Kangin grumble.
“Just keep trying,” Leeteuk encouraged from his spot beside Kangin.
“Easy for you to say, you don’t have rocks being thrown at your head,” Kangin retorted.
“If you would get your shield up, they wouldn’t hit your head,” Youngsaeng said as he picked up another pebble and threw it at Kangin.
It hit him square in the forehead and he dropped his hands before growling, “If I knock you off this mountain it will work just as well.”
From his perch on a rock a few hundred feet away, Avanipala laughed. He had lead Leeteuk and Kangin up through the forest until it thinned and became rocky hill side that they had proceeded to climb. They had stopped at a semi level clearing where Kyujong and Youngsaeng had been waiting for them. The view from the height would have been breath taking, if he had had anytime to admire it.
“I think he might have to learn the same way I did,” Kyujong said softly.
Youngsaeng sighed. “I was trying to avoid that, but I guess it can’t be helped.” He dropped his handful of pebble onto the ground and look around him. “That one looks good,” he declared pointing out a rock only slightly larger than his fist. Kyujong nodded and flicked his finger. The rock floated obediently into the air.
“What are you doing with that?” Kangin asked narrowing his eyes. Kyujong didn’t answer. Instead he flicked his finger forward sending the rock flying in their direction.
Kangin braced himself for impact knowing there was nothing he could do to stop a rock like that if he couldn’t even stop a pebble. At the last second, however, he realized the rock was not headed for him, but for Leeteuk. “Leeteuk!” he called in warning and thrust out his arm in an effort to stop it even though there was little chance he would be able to reach the rock with his fingers let alone anything else.
Miraculously, in the next moment, the rock made a ninety degree turn and flew off the mountain. Kangin blinked, still in shock as Leeteuk simply stared ahead wide eyed. Across from them, Youngsaeng laughed and clapped.
“That wasn’t funny,” Kangin growled.
“It wasn’t supposed to be,” Kyujong told him. “I sent the rock towards you, you sent it away. To shield is one thing but to deflect and reroute the path of an object is another. You did both instinctively to protect your Singer. As earth elements our desire to protect exceeds everything else. That is part of why we make excellent healers.”
Kangin blinked and look down at his hands. “I did that.”
“You did,” Kyujong confirmed.
Leeteuk gave his knee a reassuring squeeze.
“Now just remember that feeling of wanting to protect and you can do it at will,” Youngsaeng told him as he gathered a handful of pebbles. “Ready?”
Kangin took a deep breath and then raised his head and flashed the other man a confident smile, “Yeah.”

Heechul snarled in anger and jerked his head to the side. The flames that Yunho had sent at him were beginning to lick around the edge of his shield. If they singed his hair he would not be a happy camper.
“Come on Heechul, you can do better then this,” Yunho taunted as the slammed his metal clad wrist against Heechul’s failing shield. Heechul could do better then a simple shield, much better in fact. The problem was his reserves were gone. Without forming a connection with Hankyung or Siwon he had no power to weave into anything better.
”Use your brain brat! Endellion’s voice filled his head. ”You are smarter then this!”
“Thinking doesn’t help me! I don’t have a Song,” Heechul snarled. Yunho must have realized that Heechul was not talking to him, because he continued to rain blows on the shield without comment.
”You always have a Song brat. You cannot live without a Song.”
“My Song can’t give me power,” he snarled. Cracks were beginning to appear in the invisible shield in front of him.
”You have joined your Song with one that can,” Endellion said calmly.
“Hankyung isn’t even here,” Heechul replied frustrated. How was he supposed to be able to hear Hankyung to start using his Song if he wasn’t even nearby?
Heechul gasped as Yunho dealt a blow to his shield that shattered it. If the way Yunho’s arm was pulled back to deliver another blow was any indication, the man was not about to stop his assault at the loss of a shield. Heechul could see it now; after Kyujong put him back together Hankyung would cuff him on the back of his head and tell him he should have used his power since it was right there.
The man’s eyes widened as he realized what his imagination had just provided him with. He made a note to praise his vivid imagination for saving his pretty face later. Then, without wasting another moment he reached inside himself for the murmur of Hankyung’s Song that was always there. A sharp tug brought the song soaring to the front of his mind and the power from it filled him. This time when Yunho’s arm came down the crash of metal on metal rang through the forest as Heechul caught it on the blade of the freshly materialized sword.
Smirking he leaned forward, “I’m going to kick your ass for threatening my hair.”
Predictably Yunho was not phased in the slightest. “What are you going to do princess?”
“This,” Heechul dropped his body lower to the ground and, using a move that Hankyung had told him would utilize his long legs, he spun and drove his heal into Yunho’s side. Yunho staggered sideways and Heechul back peddled putting space between them. Now that Hankyung’s Song filled him he knew exactly where the man was. He glanced at the sword in his hand and ordered it to go to Hankyung, confident that it would be able to. It dissolved in a flash of fire, leaving his hands free.
“Not bad,” Yunho told him rubbing his side. “But now you’re weaponless and we both know how well you weave and fight at the same time.”
“Good thing for me you are long winded today,” Heechul smirked. He held out both hands and rings of fire curled around them. Spinning he flung out one arm sending fire Yunho’s direction and immediately following it with his body. As long as the fire came from him it would never hurt him.
In the trees Hankyung blinked in slight surprise as his sword materialized in his hand. He had felt Heechul’s pull on his Song and had freely given it to the other man, but he hadn’t realized that Heechul would be able to give him his weapon. He smirked as he lifted himself up, grasped the rope with one hand and sliced through it just under his hold. Hankyung grunted as his foot came free and all his weight was transferred to his shoulder. He locked eyes with Siwon and tossed his sword towards the other man before he released his hold to drop down.
In midair he performed a few summersaults, hoping to slow his fall to the ground. His real hope, however, laid with Heechul and in the fact that the man would realize he was falling. Heechul did realize, nearly too late, and he winced as he hit an invisible shield that gave beneath him but slowed him enough that he was able to land lightly on his feet on the ground. The second his feet touched the ground he surged into action. Heechul was holding himself well enough against Yunho but without much formal combat training and with as small as his frame was, there was little he could do. Hankyung on the other hand could do plenty.
He spun into hand to hand with Yunho, throwing arms and legs into action, and driving the man back and away from Heechul. A minute later Siwon dropped onto a lower branch of the tree before dropping to the ground. He ran past Heechul and brushed his fingers along the back of Heechul’s hand singing as he went. The brief contact was enough for Heechul to grab Siwon’s Song and by the time he had reached Yunho and Hankyung, Siwon held his own sword in his free hand. Between one hit and the next, he passed Hankyung his sword and the two began their attack as one.
Changmin dropped down moments later and Heechul cut him off from Yunho with a burst of well directed fire. He kept half an eye on Hankyung and Siwon and at the same time held Changmin at bay with burst of fire.
’Well done brat,’ Endellion said, just as Hankyung and Siwon had Yunho pinned against a tree. ’Enough for today.’It was as if the cat’s very words held power because Heechul felt himself unable to make a harsh action against Changmin or Yunho. He huffed and let the fire in his hands die. Spinning he found Siwon and Hankyung checking to make sure that Yunho was alright. Heechul was already moving towards them when Hankyung turned to face him.
“Hee-“ the Chinese man didn’t get more then the syllabus out before Heechul used his a weaving to push Hankyung backwards against a tree and hold him there. He quickly closed the distance between them, fisted his hands in Hankyung’s shirt, and pressed his lips firmly to Hankyung’s. The weaving holding Hankyung, fell away allowing the man to wrap his free arm around Heechul and use it to pull the man’s body tighter into his before he deepened the kiss. Long ago Hankyung had learned when to ask questions and when to just flow with it.
Heechul allowed the kiss to go on for a moment longer before he ripped his mouth away from Hankyung’s. “I care about you, but if you ever give something I made you to Siwon again I will kill you,” he said fiercely. “I’m sleeping with you not him.” Having said his piece Heechul pulled away from Hankyung, caused both weapons to disappear and simultaneously severed their connection. Then he turned and began heading back towards the direction of civilization with irritated stomps.
Siwon blinked in confusion and Hankyung stepped away from the tree to do the only think he could: laugh. “I don’t understand,” Siwon stated.
“Don’t ask me,” Yunho said as he let both his and Changmin’s items slip away. “Those two,” he gestured to Hankyung and then Heechul’s retreating back, “have some freaky thing going on that gives them different abilities or something.”
Endellion laughed and leapt from a tree branch onto Siwon’s shoulder. He settled there with his tail waving lazily down the man’s back. ’When a Weaver makes an item or spell for a Singer, they instinctively use that Singers Song to weave it and then send it back. In that way the item represents the relationship the two have and they don’t feel anything strange it the exchange. You were not taught this because it is very rare that Weavers and Singers are anything more than good friends. Likely your teacher has never experienced this.’
“So now that Heechul and Hankyung are… you know. It makes their connection different,” Siwon said as he tried to reason through it.
A warm chuckle filled his mind. ’Yes now there is a sexual connection between them. Don’t worry Singer of Fire, as long as you don’t touch anything not made for you, the brat will never feel like he has had sex with you.’
Siwon’s face flushed, “He… I … Didn’t.”
“That is way too much information about Heechul. Don’t need to know what goes on in your dorm,” Changmin declared. “I’m hungry lets go.” Yunho nodded his agreement and the group began following the path Heechul had just taken.
“Like you don’t know what the fans are saying about your dorm,” Hankyung said with half a smile on his face.
“Despite fan’s beliefs our games don’t result in group orgies,” Yunho said with a chuckle.
“No but there was that one time-“ Changmin began to say, but fell silent as Yunho offered him a look that only leaders could perfect.
“Remember who weaves your things,” he cautioned. Changmin snorted.

By the time the group reached the dorms it was nearly dark. There was a great deal of chatter coming from the largest dorm that Super Junior inhabited. With a shrug the men headed there. At the door Endellion bid them good night and disappeared into the forest again.
As they entered the room they were forced to squint momentarily at the change in light. Around the large table most of Super Junior was chatting animatedly. The members of SS501 and the rest of DBSK were scattered around adding to the chaos. Heechul had already found himself a corner of the table and was sitting there scowling darkly. Everyone but Kibum had shifted away from him either consciously or unconsciously.
Hankyung, ignoring the irritated look that Heechul was giving him, sat down directly beside him. If Heechul’s gaze could set him on fire then he would be a small pile of ashes. Hankyung leaned close to the man so that he could whisper lowly in his ear. “Oh stop it. You’re not that mad, and your irritation is scaring the kids,” he placed a hand on Heechul’s thigh and slid it upwards as he spoke. “And if you are that angry with me, why don’t you save it and put it to good use tonight.” Hankyung knew further elaboration wasn’t necessary, but he flexed his finger on Heechul’s upper thigh just to reiterate his point.
Somewhat mollified Heechul leaned into his side and stopped glaring at everyone else. Kibum raised a curious brow in their direction but knew better then to ask. Beside him Donghae was eagerly telling Sungmin what had happened that day.
“They told me I should create a shield and then Hyunjoong dumped a ton of water on us!” Donghae waved his arms around for emphasis. “Then he sucked all the water off us just to dump it on us again. Finally I was able to keep our faces dry. That counts right?”
“Definitely,” Sungmin agreed. “You should have seen it though, Donghae. Jungmin and Hyungjoon can fly! I can’t wait until I can do that!”
Hankyung ignored the rest of their conversation and picked up a slice of meat on some sort of bread to nibble on while he listened to others. On Heechul’s other side Kyuhyun was talking with Zhou mi.
“It wasn’t even funny. I was supposed to be creating a shield to dodge the slices of air and all Sungmin and Shindong were doing was getting flying lessons from Hyungjoon. They can’t even fly without me figuring this out first,” he said irritably.
“Did you?” Zhou mi asked.
“Yeah eventually, only after Jungmin had torn my shirt to shreds.” Zhou mi made a noise of acknowledgment. “How did it go with you guys?”
“It was strange,” Zhou mi admitted. “Junsu was throwing these balls of light at us that sort of stung as they hit. Then the next thing I knew they were bouncing off something in mid air right in front of us. I don’t know how Yesung did it but he just smiled. After that he was able to deflect every one Junsu or Yoochun threw at him. By the end he even started throwing his own back. We only came back because Ryeowook insisted that we come eat since we skipped lunch.”
Hankyung chuckled to himself and then scowled as Heechul leaned forward and stole the last bit of his food from his fingers. “You could have asked,” he grumbled.
“You want it back?” Heechul asked sticking out his tongue with the saliva covered bit of food on it.
“No,” Hankyung shook his head and reached for another slice as Heechul pulled the food back into his mouth.
Down the table Kangin was relaying his daily events to Siwon. “They threw a rock at Leeteuk’s head!” he growled, still irritated over the whole ordeal. A shocked look crossed Siwon’s face.
“They did?” he asked.
“Yeah to teach me to protect,” Kangin said sarcastically while glancing in Youngsaeng’s direction who continued to ignore him in favor of listening to Hyunjoong’s latest tale.
The rest of the conversation Hankyung tuned out. Instead he leaned down and pressed his mouth to Heechul’s neck. Heechul’s eyes widened with surprise as he felt the Chinese man begin to nibble on his skin. He elbowed him in the ribs and hissed, “Knock it off.”
“Why? You like it,” Hankyung mumbled into his skin while sliding his hand higher.
“Not at the dinner table I don’t.”
“Sure you do,” Hankyung lifted his head to whisper in Heechul’s ear as his hand settled over the other mans crotch. “You love to make a scene,” he purred while flexing his fingers.
Heechul jerked away from his hands and glared. “I’m going to bed,” he announced. He climbed to his feet, turned, and stormed away, leaving Hankyung blinking after him.
He had only been in their shared room a few minutes when he heard a soft knock on the door. “Heechul. Open the door,” Hankyung ordered softly.
“No. You have been a bastard all day,” Heechul snarled.
“Oh for the… Heechul the sword thing wasn’t my fault and you know it. I didn’t know about it. Look, don’t make me talk to you through the door.”
“Fine. You have one minute,” Heechul threw the deadbolt on the door and forcefully jerked it open. “Talk.”
“Heechul I,” Hankyung paused as if trying to collect his thought then he sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“Go on,” Heechul ordered blandly.
“I don’t know what came over me. You were and I was…”
“I was what?” Heechul pressed.
Hankyung looked up and narrowed his eyes. “Are you really going to make me stand in the hallway and say it?”
Heechul shrugged nonchalantly, “I hear the grass here is pretty soft for sleeping.”
Hankyung sighed. “You were hot ok? You know it turns me on when you get all worked up in a tizzy, you’re more passionate that way. I don’t know what came over me. Can I come in now?”
The other man’s head cocked to the side as if he was pondering, “I suppose you can come in and grovel for forgiveness properly.” Hankyung didn’t wait for a second invitation. He slipped in the door and Heechul shut it behind him. “I’m waiting.”
“Have I ever told you how sexy that shirt looks on you,” Hankyung said lowly knowing the best way to stay in the room and Heechul’s good graces was praise.
“It’s just an old T-shirt,” Heechul said flippantly.
“But on you it looks newer then new,” he took one step then another towards Heechul.
“You’re stretching,” Heechul told him smirking as his back pressed against the wall and Hankyung pressed close to him.
“Is it working?”
“Maybe,” Heechul wrapped his arm around Hankyung’s neck and allowed the other man to kiss him. He slipped one leg between Hankyung’s placing them in even closer proximity.
When he was done with Heechul’s lips for the minute, Hankyung moved on to feathering kisses down the man’s neck. “You are the sexiest, most breathtaking, most passionate, most gorgeous, person that I know,” Hankyung mumbled into Heechul’s neck.
“Are you being sarcastic?” Heechul asked suspiciously.
“I would never,” Hankyung replied sarcastically.
“Note the location of me knee. I could always turn you into a woman you know,” as if to illustrate his point Heechul rocked forward sliding his leg along Hankyung’s.
He chuckled. “You wouldn’t. You like me as a man to much.”
“I don’t know. If you were a women then I could have little mini -“ Hankyung cut him off with a firm press of his lips.
When he pulled away his face was serious. “I am sorry Heechul. I know you don’t like flaunting our relationship.”
“You’re sorry? Prove it,” Heechul challenged. Hankyung smirked and proceed to do just that for the next couple hours at the very least.
