Oh, I don't know that I'd call it baffling. After all, we do live in a very image driven society. It's a society that rewards those who suffer from disordered eating, as long as it's the right kind. Add to that the fact that "beautiful" people get special rights and privileges, and you've got a social situation ripe for upset when situations like this occur.
One of these days we might, as a society, get the whole "beauty is only skin deep" thing. Maybe hearing over and over again that people's insides don't always match our outside perception of them will help.
.... I actually feel that way quite often about TV. That's a big chunk of the reason I don't watch much of it. Unfortunately, I find myself feeling that way more and more about news on the internet, too.
